If you’re an Android user or have owned an Android phone for the past nine years, listen up: Google just agreed to a $135 million lawsuit That you are probably a class member. While the final payout is still up in the air, you may be entitled to up to $100.
What is a lawsuit?
litigation, Taylor V. Google LLCIt alleges that Google is complicit in allowing Android devices to send large amounts of user data to Google without users’ permission. The suit not only highlights the privacy implications, it also hammers Google for using users’ cellular data. According to the lawsuit details, Google denies any wrongdoing in the case, but has agreed to settle for $135 million. As part of that settlement, Google will have to update the Play Store’s terms of service as well as Android’s setup screen to disclose the data collection and offer users a choice about whether to opt into it. The company will also disable a related setting on Android devices, though it’s not clear exactly what that setting is.
As with many of these class action lawsuits, the breadth of affected users is huge here. You are a class member if you live in the United States and have used an Android mobile device with a cellular plan at any time from November 12, 2017, to the date the settlement was finally approved. The only other condition is that you cannot be a member of the class Csupo Vs. Google LLCWhich is the same claim for Android users living in California.
The lawsuit estimates there will be approximately 100 million class members. You might think that would entitle everyone to $135, but the terms of the settlement limit payouts to a maximum of $100. While that may be the final number, the settlement will require administrative costs, taxes, attorney fees and other expenses to be paid first, so it may be lower depending on what is owed.
