‘I’ve used jute rugs in every room of the house, from the dining room and living room to the bedroom,’ says Laura Stephens, who has her own collection of jute rugs with charming graphic, colorful borders. Catherine, however, agrees with Laura. ‘I personally love them in the bedroom, although I probably wouldn’t use them in the bathroom because they can get marked by water.’ Water stains aside, Laura adds that another advantage of these mattresses is that they are very durable and hardy. In terms of cleaning them I let any mud or debris dry and hoover it up afterwards.
‘I think the beauty of jute, sisal, seagrass, rush matting is the perfect combination of texture and colour,’ says Stella Weatherall, and Jessica Summer, an interior designer known for her more minimalist aesthetic, agrees. ‘It works perfectly with my approach of using texture rather than contrasting colors to bring interest to the space, create a timeless look and bring more harmony and balance. In general I don’t want the floor covering to ‘shout out’, but rather quietly add interest and beauty.’
