Discover how God gives you unique gifts and talents to use for His glory, and why your superpower is more important than you think.

This morning, I really didn’t want to write a post. I was tired, it was dark outside, and my bed felt very comfortable. After some debating in my head, I pulled myself up, turned to my quiet study, and here I sit, asking God to fill me with His Holy Spirit so that He may be glorified on this page and on this blog.
I think blogging is the best job in the world. It’s mostly a pleasure, even on early mornings like this when my bed feels too good to leave.
I’m not saying there aren’t frustrations, setbacks, and long days, but blogging is in my wheelhouse, my favorite place. It uses many talents that come easily to me, and I enjoy it more than I can say. To me, it seems almost second nature. That is my superpower. Not bragging, just being truthful.
I’m often asked, even by my own mother, “How do you do it? Where do you get your creativity?” And my first answer is always the same. god indeed.
Ephesians 2:10 says: “For we are God’s workmanship in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
God has gifted each of us with talents, aptitudes, skills and all the things we are naturally good at. He is the giver of our superpowers.
When something just doesn’t come naturally
When I was young, I took piano lessons for five and a half years. It was a painful experience for everyone involved. Although I can read music and play a little, I get nervous when I sit down at the piano. It’s more work than fun for me and anyone within earshot.
Over the years, I started practicing Christmas carols in September so I could pick up a few tunes to play on Christmas morning. As much as I tried, wished, practiced and studied, the piano just wasn’t a natural fit for me. And singing? Let’s just say that when God was giving musical talent, I was nowhere near that line.
But I came early to stand in line for other giveaways.
Just think about what comes easily to you and what makes you happy. You will be in front of that line. These are your God-given superpowers! God, in His great wisdom, created us to excel at something. Actually, many things!
You are God’s one-of-a-kind masterpiece
Some of us are brilliant or deeply creative. Some are compassionate, or gifted problem solvers or natural teachers. Some are diplomatic, artistic, or incredibly encouraging. The world needs every one of those gifts, including yours.
There are things you and I can do with ease and real joy. There are things we can go through, but they seem like the heaviest kind of work. It didn’t happen by chance. Think about the things you think are easy, the things you are actually above average. Where did it come from? Our families may certainly nurture our gifts, but God is the true giver of each of them.
And here’s the part that still takes my breath away.
God knew you, planned for you, thought of you, and gifted you before you were ever born.
You are his craft
Ephesians 2:10 says that You are his craft.
The Greek word for craftsmanship is POIEMA (poy-ay-mah). It means a kind of masterpiece. You are a masterpiece. It also conveys the idea that you are God’s poetry to the world. Can you hear the word rhyme in POIEMA?
God gave you your talents and everything so that you can flourish in them. And when people ask you why you’re so good at something, the best answer you can give is just… God.
He has blessed you with gifts not to squander the joy of self-discovery or be tainted by sin, but to magnify them and show them to the world.
Put your gifts to work
Years ago, I stopped writing this blog for a few months. It felt like a kind of loss I wasn’t ready for, and for a while, I wasn’t sure I’d ever get back to it. I felt strongly that God was not pleased with how I was using my gifts, and more honestly, I began to care more about my blog than about him.
And he was right. He is always right. So in an act of obedience, I put the blog away. Some of you may remember that season. It was hard, but it was exactly what I needed.
During that quiet time God spoke clearly into my life through His Word. He was, is and always will be first. And I was not putting my gift giver in that place. As you can see, he has restored the blog, and I am more grateful than ever. I am also now more careful about how I use what He has given me.
It’s really about God.
How are you using the talents and natural gifts God has given you? Can you imagine if we all used it not for ourselves but to be the best at what we do to glorify God?
When we use our gifts to show God to the world, it’s a win-win experience. We do what we are good at, what comes naturally and what we were created to do! And we use it so others can see the work of our great creator! We are His masterpieces!
Let your superpowers shine by doing good deeds that God gave you long before your birth. And in doing so, glorify God!
This verse is thought provoking…
Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16.
