In the original kitchen every appliance was pressed against two narrow walls, leaving little counter space and no room for more than one person to cook. Custom flat-panel oak cabinets, ceiling-height storage, integrated pantry access, quartzite countertops and hidden organization transform a narrow galley into a workspace where every cabinet serves a purpose.
Original kitchen mixed collection with living space
The kitchen occupied one side of the long narrow room while the rest functioned as an extension of the living area. Freestanding shelving, a beverage refrigerator, water dispenser, and small furniture pieces control the overflow as the cabinetry provides some specialized storage.
The upper cabinet stopped well below the ceiling, leaving unused space above while the microwave dominated the cooking wall. The galley layout already exists, but the storage system forces everyday items out of the kitchen.
Each walkway passes through the cooking zone
The original layout forced movement through a narrow aisle between two continuous counters. The range sat below the over-the-range microwave while the pantry remained outside the work triangle outside the kitchen entrance.
Blue tape on cabinet doors marks the planning stage before demolition. Rather than changing the finishes alone, the project reconfigured how the rooms would function within the same footprint.
Gale remained but the cabinet was completely changed

Large slab quartzite countertops replace dark laminate, under-cabinet lighting brightens the workspace, and the microwave goes into custom cabinets instead of hanging above the stove.
The pantry began to disappear behind cabinet doors
The original pantry remains visible through standard doors next to the refrigerator. After the remodel, tall cabinet panels frame the refrigerator while a frosted glass pocket door creates a cleaner transition to the pantry.
Instead of taking the shelves out of the kitchen, the pantry seems to be attached to the cabinetry, the storage room disappearing when the door is closed.
The backsplash became the largest decorative surface
With no window above the sink, the backsplash covers almost the entire wall. Handmade square ceramic tiles create texture throughout while a pair of wall sconces replace what could otherwise be upper cabinets.
Lighting turns a blank wall into a design feature while saving valuable countertop space below. According to the builder, several ideas were considered before settling on this solution, including artwork and mirrors.
Each cabinet began to look like a solid wall
Cabinet fronts eliminate exposed hinges, decorative arches, fillers and uneven cabinet heights found in original kitchens. Thin brass pulls become the only visible hardware in the entire room.
Small filler strips align with the cabinet face rather than being interrupted, allowing the refrigerator, microwave cabinet and corner storage to read as one continuous installation.
Storage moved inside cabinets instead of on counters
Wide drawers replace many original base cabinets, making it easy to organize cookware without stacking it deep inside the bottom shelves. Hidden toe-kick drawers add another layer of under-cabinet storage without increasing the kitchen footprint.
Small appliances now occupy dedicated cabinet sections rather than remaining on countertops, with quartzite surfaces available for food preparation rather than permanent storage.
Remodeled removed visual noise
A before-and-after comparison shows how the remodel removed visual clutter rather than adding decoration. Arched oak doors gave way to flat-panel white oak cabinets, massive soffits disappeared behind full-height cabinets, and dark laminate counters were replaced with continuous quartzite that wraps the room.
Brushed brass hardware introduces subtle accents throughout the cabinetry, while a pair of wall sconces turn the sink wall into an architectural feature rather than leaving it as a bare tiled surface. Each finish now supports the same clean, restrained palette, making compact kitchens feel larger without changing its footprint.
