We live in the Charlotte area, which means we are on the brink of panic when even a I whisper a winter storm is mentioned by our local meteorologist.
snow? No worries. But ice? This is where things get really dangerous. And because of where we live, ice is much more common, which also means that power outages are a very real problem whenever winter weather hits.
Over the years, we’ve learned that preparing for a winter storm doesn’t have to be stressful or dramatic; it just has to be intentional. If you already have a basic hurricane home disaster kit on hand (like the one I shared before in What we pack in our home disaster kit), you’re already ahead of the game. Many of these same supplies translate perfectly to winter storms.
To make this as easy and thorough as possible, I’ve put together a step-by-step winter storm prep checklist broken down into 3 days before, 2 days before, and the day before the storm hits, plus a full list of power-free food ideas to help you eat well even if the power goes out.
* This list may be too much for some. But I wanted to provide you with AS MUCH information as possible so you can do as much or as little preparation as you want to give your family and home peace of mind. Don’t let panic or anxiety get the best of you. It’s okay if you don’t follow every single one of these prep tips.*
(See the bottom of this post for a printable PDF version of this checklist that you can print and use to prepare your home for winter storms.)
