I have a question for you. When was the last time you prayed about something before you did something else?
Not just when life gets tough, or a crisis hits your doorstep. But also in ordinary, everyday moments. Before a difficult conversation. On a decision that seems too small to bother God. In the middle of a good day, just to say thank you.
Prayer is not a glass breaker in an emergency. It is the heartbeat of living close to God.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6
everything. Not just the big things. Not just scary things. everything.
This little word changes everything about the way we approach prayer. God doesn’t wait for things to get desperate before He wants to hear from you. He wants to be a part of it all, the hard days and the happy days, the big decisions and the small, the worries and the celebrations.
This post is about that. Not only how to pray when life breaks down, but how to make prayer the first and most natural thing you do in every moment of your life.
Prayer is your most powerful weapon
Most of us want to pray more. We mean. But sometimes prayer feels a bit like talking in the air, like we’re doing something small while the really important things in life are happening around us.
But that’s just not true.
A sincere person’s prayer is powerful and effective. James 5:16b
Your prayers are not disappearing into the ceiling. They are doing something real, even if you can’t see it. They push back the darkness. They invite God into the midst of whatever you are taking. They work on your heart and the hearts of those you love.
And this is the part that still stops me in my tracks. The God who created the universe, who holds everything together and knows the end from beginning to end, actually wants to hear from you and me. About all of them. It is not very busy. He is not interested. He leans down to listen.
He is the one we get to pray to.
Pray first, pray often, pray about everything
Philippians 4:6 doesn’t say to pray about big things, or scary things, or just things you can’t handle on your own. That says it all. That one word completely changes the way I think about prayer.
Prayer is not something we save for emergencies. It is woven into the entire fabric of our lives, the hard days and the happy days, the big decisions and the ones that seem almost too small to mention.
Pray when life is hard
This usually happens when we remember to pray! When things fall apart, when we are worried, heartbroken or completely overwhelmed, we turn to God. And that’s okay. He is our refuge and our strength, and He can handle every difficult, heavy, messy thing that we bring to Him.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present helper in trouble. Psalm 46:1.
However, what I have learned is that the earlier I pray, the better. Not after I worried him to pieces. Not after I called everyone I know. First. Before prayer changes everything about how I get through difficult things.
Prayer gives me something real to cling to in times of trouble.
Pray when life is good
This one is easy to forget. When life is going well, when we are happy, and things are flowing, the temptation is to just enjoy it without stopping to acknowledge the one who gave it to us.
But gratitude is one of the sweetest forms of prayer. Noticing and telling of God’s goodness keeps our hearts tender and our eyes open to His hand in our daily lives.
O Lord, with all my heart I will thank you; I will tell of all your wonderful works. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I, the Most High, will sing the praises of your name.
Lord, I will thank you from my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful works. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, above all. Psalm 9:1-2
Pray for others
Some of the most powerful prayers we will ever pray are not for ourselves. Praying for those we love, and even for those who are difficult to love, is one of the most generous and faith-filled things we can do.
I ask then, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people. 1 Timothy 2:1
all people There’s that word again. Just not easy.
How to Create a Simple Daily Prayer Life
Prayer is like another relationship. The more time you invest in it, the deeper and more natural it will become. You don’t have to take it all out to get started. You just have to start.
Start honest and start small
You don’t need to recite a fully worded prayer or set aside an hour. You just need to show up and talk to God honestly about what’s in front of you. Some of the most meaningful prayers are just a few simple words. He already knows your heart. He is just waiting for you to open the conversation.
Pray without ceasing
Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17
This does not mean that you have to be on your knees all day. It means having an open, ongoing conversation with God woven throughout your day.
If you’ve never read “Practicing the presence of God” by Brother Lawrence, I can’t recommend it enough. This little book changed the way I pray. Brother Lawrence was a 17th century monk who worked in a monastery kitchen, and he discovered that every ordinary moment of the day can communicate with God. Washing dishes, cooking a meal. Walking from room to room, made my way of counsel to pray to God. It’s a beautiful way to stay connected to the source of life.
Thanks for the quiet morning. A prayer of breath before a tough conversation. A moment of surrender before you sleep. Gradually, prayer becomes a natural rhythm of your life rather than something you have to memorize.
Pray the word of God
One of the most powerful ways to pray is to open your Bible and pray the scriptures directly to God. When you don’t know what to say, say their words. When you are afraid, find a verse about His protection and pray to Him. When you are worried, find a promise about His faithfulness and pray it back.
Because the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12
When you pray Scripture you don’t just recite the words. You are praying something alive, something that has the power and will of God in it. The Psalms are a wonderful place to start. They are honest, raw, beautiful and full of faith, and they cover every emotion and situation you will ever find yourself in.
When I see a scripture in my Bible that relates to a specific person or need for prayer, I write that person’s name in the margin with the date next to it. There is something very sweet about coming across the name I wrote there. That scripture is a sign to pray over them again or to put a little red star next to their name when God answers that prayer. My Bible has become a living record of God’s faithfulness.
🌿 Tip Box: Choose one song a week and pray through it every morning. You’ll be surprised how quickly it shapes the way you talk to God and how deeply it brings your heart to the truth.
Keep a prayer list
There is something really meaningful about writing down what you pray for. It keeps you focused and relevant, and it builds your faith when you look back and see how God has moved. A simple notebook works beautifully for this.
I keep a prayer journal, and it’s really nothing fancy. It’s just a binder closed with a tab divider, one for family, one for friends, etc. I write down all the needs, desires, happiness, sorrows. Some things I pray for every day or during my day; Some a few times a week, and some weekly, etc. And when a prayer is answered in God’s way, I put a red star on it.
Surrender the result
This is the hardest part for most of us. We pray, and then we take it back and worry about it again. But true prayer is met with open hands. God, it’s here. I trust you with this.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
She is not a wish-granting genie. He is the Lord of the universe, and His plan is always better than ours, even if it doesn’t look the way we expect it to.
Prayer is not complicated. It’s not reserved for people who have all the right words, a perfectly quiet house, or an hour set aside every morning. It is simply an ongoing, honest, faith-filled conversation with a God who absolutely loves you and wants to be a part of every moment of your life.
Big moments and little moments. Hard days and beautiful days. The worries you harbor in the middle of the night and the gratitude you feel in the morning when the sun shines through your kitchen window.
He wants it all.
And then wait with anticipation. I love the ancient image of the watchman high on the city wall, eyes fixed on the horizon, watching for word from the king. That was his whole job. to see. to wait to expect Not wondering if the king will send a message, but knowing that he will is watching with confidence.
This is how I want to pray. Bringing everything to my King and then standing on the watchtower, eyes fixed on the horizon, fully expecting to hear from him. Because He hears us. He is working. And he is faithful every time.
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14
