Replacing the tile countertops and ceramic floor wasn’t part of the budget, so the Reddit user u/DayZ-0253 A different approach was chosen. In eight days, working 12 to 14 hours a day with family help, they repainted the original oak cabinets rather than replacing them.
Sage green lower cabinets, white uppers, fresh hardware and bright grout changed the look of the kitchen while leaving the original tile countertops and flooring in place.
Orange oak defines every surface
Orange oak cabinets line both sides of the galley kitchen, surrounded by beige tile countertops, matching backsplash and ceramic floor tile. Warm wood stains dominate the room and every finish seems to belong to the same era.
Although the cabinets remained in good condition, the overall color palette made the kitchen feel heavier than its size.
White upper cabinets changed the balance
The upper cabinets received Sherwin-Williams Pure White, while the lower cabinets were painted Sherwin-Williams Parisian Patina. The two-tone approach broke up the long rows of cabinetry and reflected more natural light through the windows.
Using white above and sage green below helped make the narrow kitchen feel more open without changing the layout.
Pantry cabinets became part of the design
The tall pantry cabinet kept its original shape and storage but received the same fresh paint treatment as the rest of the kitchen.
Matching finishes in each cabinet created a continuous design from one end of the room to the other.
Wood counter added warmth
A wood countertop instead of the original surface of the pantry cabinets introduced a natural accent next to the painted cabinets and white microwave niche.
The warm wood tone ties in with the original floor while adding contrast against the sage green base cabinets.
Paint replaced demolition
Instead of removing the cabinets, the homeowner sanded every surface, applied Behr Dynasty primer, then finished the cabinets with three coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Enamel using rollers. Cabinet hardware was replaced after the paint cured.
Keeping the original cabinet box avoided a major renovation, giving it a completely different look.
Tile countertops looked brighter
The beige tile countertops stayed where they were. What changed was everything around them. Fresh cabinet colors and whitewashed grout make the tile look lighter and cleaner, leading many Reddit readers to believe the countertops have been replaced.
The homeowner explained that the grout was whitewashed with a paint-and-water mixture rather than refinished, creating a bright surface without removing the tile.
Black hardware finished cabinets
New black pulls replaced the original hardware and added contrast to both cabinet colors.
Darker hardware sharpened the tall-panel doors while giving the old cabinets a more current look.
The original floor became a neutral background
The ceramic tile floor also remained untouched. Once the cabinets were replaced, the floor blended into the overall palette rather than competing with the wood finish that had previously dominated the room.
The homeowner chose the cabinet and wall colors because it wasn’t possible to change the floors and countertops, proving that paint can help existing finishes work together rather than fight against them.
