I wrote this post years ago, before I had the joy of knowing the grandchildren I now love so much. Today, that little boy I was waiting for, he is now nine years old and still the apple of my eye.
As I read these words, I felt a quiet nudge to share them again. The story dates back to earlier seasons, but the prayers never stopped.
I still remember waiting for my first grandchild…
Waiting for our little boy
As I write this now I am so amazed that I have six lovely grandchildren, four boys and two girls, ages four to nine. Some came naturally, and some by adoption. They come in all colors and personalities, and they are all loved beyond measure. To say I am blessed is a huge understatement. May God bless you and your family for reading today’s post.
In about four short weeks, I will have a new little man in my life, my first grandchild. And I can hardly wait to meet him. To say I’m over the moon is an understatement. I am crying and happy and completely in love already.
He fills my thoughts and prayers. I haven’t met him in person yet, but we’ve had a few very close encounters.
Last weekend, Jacqueline came for a short visit while Jonathan was out of town. She was sitting next to me in church when she gently took my hand and placed it down on her beautiful, round belly. My eyes met hers as I felt the little thump, pause, thump, pause rhythm of the baby’s hiccups.
My eyes still fill with tears when I think about that moment. It was very tender. He hiccupped for a moment, and I kept my hand there, not wanting to miss a second.
It’s wonderful to see the child that you gave life to keep within itself. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. It is truly a miracle.
She lets me get close to her round belly, hold it and talk to my grandson, who is safely tucked inside and already very fussy. Those moments are special for me. I want him to know my voice. I want him to know that he is loved before he ever enters this world.
I also have several 3D images from Jacqueline’s latest sonogram, and I can already see what it looks like. They are so clear, almost like he is posing for a photograph.
She has a sweet little mouth, chubby cheeks and my crooked nose. We know he will be a big baby, tall and with a long torso.
We know that he has ten fingers and ten toes. He can now open his eyes, and he practices breathing in and out. And he likes to kick.
Isn’t it amazing how much we can learn about a child before it’s even born?
How We Are Made
Psalm 139:13 says…
For you have formed my heart, you have knit me together together in my mother’s womb.
We get a small glimpse of how God has been knitting these little lives together since they were just weeks old. It leaves me in awe every time.
And when I see that glimpse of my grandson growing and developing, my heart responds with this prayer…
I thank you that he is fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and my soul knows it well. Psalm 139:14
You see, I have been waiting for this young man to come into my life for a long time. I have thought about it and prayed for my daughter before she ever thought of having a child of her own.
A prayer for posterity
When my children were children, I began to pray for many things that would one day come into their lives, including their spouses and their children.
This little boy has been prayed for decades. All my grandchildren have, even before I ever held one in my arms. I can pray with confidence because I may not know them yet, but I know their Creator. And I am confident that if God chooses to bless our family with children and grandchildren, He hears the sincere and faithful prayers offered on their behalf.
I pray not only for my children and grandchildren, but for every generation that comes after me.
My special prayer is that all my descendants will know, love and follow Jesus for the fifth generation. And if God delays, I pray that someone in that generation will continue this prayer and pass it over and over again until He comes.
This is something that anyone can start, no matter what season of life they are in. You don’t have to wait until you hold a baby in your arms to start praying for generations to come.
Our great father
God is our Father. He loves us deeply and cares about the things that matter most to us. He is good and perfect, full of grace and power, and He invites us to bring our deepest desires to Him.
He answers prayers that are in His will.
God is not slow to keep His promises, as some understand slow. Rather he is patient with you so that none perish but everyone comes to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9,
God wants all to come to repentance. He does not want anyone to be lost. That truth gives me great faith as I pray for my family and the generations to come after me.
Pray and never give up
what about you Do you pray for your family and for the generations to come after you? It’s one of the most meaningful things you can do.
Don’t give up. Keep praying. Even when it seems like nothing is changing, keep bringing your family before God.
I have never given up in all these years. And I won’t stop now.
God is much bigger than any situation. Pray with faith, with thanksgiving, and with a heart that believes in Him to work in ways you cannot yet see.
I may not see the full answer to these prayers this side of heaven, but I know they are important. I know God is listening. And I believe it with every generation that comes.
When I first held that little baby in my arms, and now as I watch him grow, I have more to thank God for and pray to than I ever thought possible.
I am still waiting, still watching and still praying… just for you, my beloved grandchildren.
