I have found that it is effective at repelling flies, while the scent is not as strong as a standard citronella candle. Instead, it’s a fresh, citrus scent with notes of rose, lime and black pepper.

Sweet box, winter daphne, and bodnant viburnum, known as dawn, are common choices because they scent the air when nothing else is going on. Spring then takes over with lilacs, wallflowers and lily of the valley, giving a fresh, sweet hit as the garden wakes up,” says Patrick Martin, horticulturist. Grove Mill.
‘The beginning of summer is often built around old bush roses, mock oranges and sweet peas, with the scent of the flowers and how the warm air moves through the dense planting.
‘Summer is where herbs and sun-loving plants find their keep, with lavender, rosemary, thyme, rose, jasmine and honeysuckle all contributing, plus night-scented stocks and floral tobaccos that come into their own in the evening.’
‘From late summer to autumn often in milder UK locations star jasmine, potted fragrant geraniums and more herbs are placed near the edges of the path to scent the clearing of the past.’
