Many front yards rely on one or two shrubs repeated along the base. In a project shared by Reddit user u/changed, Layered planting replaced the predictable approach with evergreen structures, ornamental grasses, seasonal flowers, colorful foliage and decorative containers throughout the front of the house.

Stone edging defines each planting bed, dark green grass unifies the landscape, and repeating groups of plants create a border that looks established from the first season. Blue gray owl junipers, distiliums, camellias, ornamental cabbages, snapdragons, dusty miller, liriope and ornamental grasses combine to provide color and structure long after the seasonal flowers fade.
Layered planting replaces a single row of shrubs

A foundation bed combines ornamental cabbage, snapdragon, variegated liriope, dusty miller, blue juniper, ornamental grasses, and evergreen shrubs rather than relying on one repetitive plant. Low, medium and tall varieties occupy different levels, creating a border that is interesting from lawn to porch.
Stone borders outline each bed while dark green grass ties each planting together. The whitewashed brick and natural cedar porch posts provide a neutral backdrop that allows the contrasting foliage and flowers to stand out.
Large containers added height near the porch

Tall ceramic containers offer vertical interest without cluttering the beds with oversized shrubs. Small ornamental trees, upright grasses and rear foliage elevate the plantings near the porch while preserving clear views from the front windows.
Container gardens also offer flexibility, allowing seasonal plants to be replaced without disturbing the permanent landscape.
Curved borders soften straight walkways

Gentle curves replace the harsh planting lines beside the concrete path. Snapdragons create a bright middle layer while ornamental cabbage, dusty miller and golden sage fill the foreground with contrasting colors and leaf shapes.
Continuous planting follows the entire base rather than leaving empty spaces between groups.
Evergreen shrubs anchor the corner bed

Blue-gray junipers, compact evergreen shrubs and ornamental trees establish a permanent structure around the outer corner. Seasonal flowers and ornamental foliage fill open spaces between larger plants without competing for attention.
The varying plant heights prevent the border from appearing flat when viewed from the street.
Repeating plant groups unify the landscape

Ornamental cabbage, snapdragon, liriope, dusty miller and clusters of ornamental grasses appear in the front beds only once in a while. Repeating the same plants connects separate planting areas into a continuous design.
Dark mulch strengthens the contrast between foliage colors while keeping planting beds visually clean.
Bright Snapdragon became the main color accent

Coral-red snapdragons stand out above the surrounding foliage, drawing attention to the border without overpowering the rest of the planting. Their upright flower spikes contrast with the rounded heads of ornamental cabbages and the beautiful texture of nearby grasses.
Even after the flowers have faded, evergreen shrubs, colorful foliage, and ornamental grasses continue to provide structure throughout the season.
