Baskets have been around for thousands of years and are amazing helpers when it comes to organizing the home. You can use them for storage, decoration or even if you want ditch your ugly toilet paper holder. Just when you thought baskets couldn’t get any more versatile, it turns out they can also be transformed into really cute lighting fixtures. The main supplies needed are an old basket and a battery operated puck light. Essentially, DIY involves using the basket as a stylish and boho-looking shade. Since the light requires no electricity, it opens the doors to be hung anywhere you want additional lighting.
Besides being a super easy project, it’s also a clever way to upcycle expensive baskets. It all starts with finding the right one. As we know, baskets come in all shapes and designs. While there’s no specific type you need, you don’t want one that’s too big or one that has handles. Just remove them if needed. To create a wall accent, a small, shallow basket can be an ideal choice. But if you want to hang it from the ceiling instead, maybe consider using a round medium basket. Of course, the nicer the better!
You can get washer lights at your local hardware store or online. Dollar Tree also sells them, like these e-Circuit Wireless LED lights which come with a remote. But if you want a little more flair, you can go for ones that feature different colors, like these EverBrite Tap Lights. Many puck lights have an adhesive backing to aid in hanging. However, a sturdy hook-and-loop strap can work if not.
Turn a wicker basket into a chic light you’ll love
First, choose an area that could use an accent light upgrade, whether it’s a hallway, kitchen, or front entryway. Next, place the bottom of your basket against the wall. Tap a nail or two through the center of it with a hammer to secure it in place. You can now attach your battery powered puck light to the center of the basket. That’s it; you’ll have a DIY lamp that will add rustic charm even when it’s not lit. Want an even brighter decor? Paint the basket a fun color before starting the project.
A little extra effort will be required if you prefer to create ceiling lighting instead. Attach a remote control puck light to the inside of the basket, making sure it is securely attached. Turn the basket over and attach a chain to the outside of the bottom using zip ties or wire. You can also tie some rope to the bottom of the basket using the gaps. Once you’ve created a hanger, install a ceiling hook anywhere you want to display your new light. One would look lovely over a table, bed or in a reading nook. Plus, using an old or used basket will do they bring warmth to any room without spending much.
