In my never-ending quest to summerize the home, I’ve been searching for real greenery.
Do you know what a high mountain to climb?
seriously.
Anyone who creates fake greenery should look to real greenery for inspiration.
Real plants are green, but not too green.
Not too shiny, not too waxy.
The leaves are of different sizes.
And in all my travels on highways and byways – I have never, never, never seen …
…a real plant with a rubber branch.
Trying to find greenery that actually looks real?
It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
But here’s the thing.
This isn’t a generic, obscure post about faux greenery because…
….I have a great tip for making these faux greenery branches look more realistic.

See this little corner of the living room?
Is there only one in the bay window? On top of the blue and white container are books and a lamp and a little blue and white cow and a ruffled vase that I fill with greenery.
Sometimes I add hydrangeas and sometimes I add simple branches and sometimes I add faux green branches.
I love, love, love ficus leaf branches, but they can be kind of pricey (especially ones that look like real ficus branches).
Somewhere along the way, someone decided that the ficus plant was at the top of the food chain.
And priced them accordingly.
I looked online for branches similar to this one and it was listed at $99.
What in the world? $99?
For something seemingly without roots?
So I got this set instead which is 44″ long and comes in a set of three for under $20.
And to make them look more real?
I do this.
I add real greenery.
Like this school.

Now you might be thinking – how do I keep the actual green branches watered? I have a few suggestions:
- Certain real greenery (like eucalyptus, for example) can dry out in place
- I let it dry in place and don’t add water
- You can also lightly mist the greenery to keep it fresher for longer
- You can also add water to the vase with faux and real greenery (Just make sure to check and replace them so the wrong plants don’t get mold on them)

I make sure to twist them this way and that bit to make the arrangement more realistic. For example, see a branch that hangs down? I twisted them to hang down to look like branches from the yard.
Here are some more tips on how to make fake greenery look more realistic:
- If the leaves look too shiny, you can always use a matte floral spray or even rub them with a cotton ball dusted with baby powder.
- Look to see if the stem is rubbery – if it’s not something that occurs in nature – clearly calf.
- I like layering in at least three different types of greenery to vary the texture
- Stay away from symmetry – real branches do not grow into full stems
- Please, please dust them – nothing gets rid of false branches except a layer of dust
- A little mist with water – it gives the illusion of real branches
And of course – add in real greenery.

Another example with this arrangement I just added to the living room for a grad party we hosted this weekend.
I started with The white hydrangea.
And then I added in a pack of greenery that you can buy at the grocery store and now the arrangement looks like it came from a florist.
I also think – on another note, that today’s false branches are not your grandmother’s false flowers. They keep looking more real and realistic.

These fake branches keep me and my living room company and they feel really real.
Not a rubber branch in sight.
Maybe you have already ordered branches like this.
Maybe you’re brighter than me and you’re shaking your head and pointing at the ficus branches on your coffee table.
Maybe I should have bought this sooner.
All I know is my living room and I’m high-fiving and drinking sweet tea.
