Back when I was designing our bathroom before its major remodel, I knew I had to make some sacrifices.
Our primary bathroom is on the small side, and over the years I’ve just accepted that I’ll always do my makeup while standing over the sink, juggling the brush next to the tube of toothpaste, like some kind of balancing act.
But deep down, I did Always Wanted some sit-down makeup space. Something that felt a little more “get ready in peace” and a little less “hurry up and hope for the best.”
And then one day it hit me…

Why does a secretary desk work as a vanity?
If you’ve ever seen a traditional secretary desk, you know it’s basically the Swiss Army Knife of furniture.
They have:

- Tons of hidden compartments
- Upper cabinet for storage
- And a closed look that keeps everything organized

The biggest problem with most makeup setups is visual clutter. Bottles, brushes, palettes… it piles up fast. But the secretary desk lets you close everything in seconds.
Closed = quiet, clean, uncluttered
Open = fully functional gating-ready station
The best of both worlds.

How I turned it into a makeup vanity
Honestly, this was one of those “low effort, high reward” projects that we love.
I don’t need to paint it or completely transform it. The bones were already beautiful.
Here is what I did:
- Mahogany wood polished with Restore-a-finish To bring him back to life
- Used some Furniture repair markers Disguise any gashes of wood
- Replaced missing shelves Inside for good organization
- Added unlacquered brass latches For a classic, timeless detail that made storage more accessible
That’s it.
Sometimes the best DIY is knowing when to do it not That’s too much.

No mess. No clutter. No visual clutter on the bathroom counter.

Decor sources
The bathroom can be one of the easiest places to forget personality. But bringing in a piece of furniture like this immediately makes the space feel layered, collected and lived in at its best.
The secretary desk was not designed as a vanity…
But it works the better Than most vanities I’ve tried.
