project A kitchen extension to an 1890s five-bedroom house in south-west London.

The inspiration for Saoirse and Richard’s new kitchen came by accident, after deciding to remove the Aga cooker from the existing space. ‘I wasn’t particularly confident cooking with it, and once we looked at removing it, we realized how much extra kitchen space we could have without it,’ explains Saoirse.
The pair then further extended the space, turning what was once a cramped kitchen and dining room into a sleek, sociable hub. ‘That’s too much A modern looking kitchenBut we’ve kept a lot of period features,’ says Saoirse.

The couple worked closely with the boutique kitchen company’s lead designer, Kasia Piorko Cat FeatherWhich encouraged them to make bold choices, especially when it came to dark mineral worktops.

‘Cassia had beautiful Caesarstone quartz in the showroom, and we loved it,’ says Saoirse. ‘We wanted to create texture against the black cabinets and white walls, and we felt this option would really anchor it all.’
Despite some dark choices, the space rarely feels flat. ‘We wanted to soften the black and white color scheme – touches of wood and brass do this beautifully.’

The kitchen also incorporates some clever design solutions. ‘I wanted to Lighting Almost invisible, but still provides plenty of light. This aged brass wall fitting was the perfect choice,’ adds about the elegant pendant and wall lights.
‘Kasia also designed a bespoke pocket sliding door for our utility room. It feels really seamless.’
‘We have a light well in the ceiling and large French doors to bring in light, which is then reflected back onto the mineral worktop,’ says Saoirse. ‘The kitchen is aging beautifully, and we’re very pleased with it.’
