A walk-in pantry often solves one problem while creating another. Wire shelving stores food efficiently, but small appliances, coffee makers, and beverage supplies usually cover kitchen countertops because pantries lack drawers and work surfaces.

Instead of serving as a place to stack groceries, the finished space became part pantry, part coffee station, and part beverage center.
Builder wire shelves fill the pantry without creating workspace
Builder-grade wire shelving covers three walls from floor to ceiling, providing plenty of storage but very little organization. Smaller pantry items shared space with cereal boxes, cookware, wine bottles, disposable plates and cleaning supplies, while hanging baskets below the shelves created additional storage without improving accessibility.
Every inch depends on the open shelves. There was nowhere permanent to house coffee equipment, countertop appliances, and bulk storage, forcing the pantry to function strictly as storage rather than extending the kitchen.
IKEA cabinet components formed the basis of the remodel
Construction began with flat-packed IKEA cabinet parts assembled inside the pantry. Two cabinet boxes formed the lower section while preserving the existing wire shelving above, allowing storage to remain useful during the early stages of construction.
Instead of removing everything at once, the lower cabinetry established the footprint for the drawers, countertop and custom built-ins that would eventually fill the wall.
Deep base cabinets introduced hidden storage
Lower cabinets immediately changed how a pantry could function. Drawers and closed storage replace open floor space while supporting the future countertop above, making room for larger kitchen supplies.
The depth of the cabinets also established a continuous work surface where appliances could be plugged in instead of shuttling between the pantry and kitchen every day.
While construction continued, the existing shelves remained
The original wire shelving remained in place while the cabinetry progressed below. That decision allowed food storage to remain organized throughout the project, rather than the need to move each pantry item elsewhere.
Construction followed a phased approach, replacing one part of the pantry at a time while preserving everyday use.
The countertop turned the pantry into a beverage station
A dark countertop transforms the lower cabinets into a dedicated preparation area for coffee and beverages. Electrical outlets located above the surface allow appliances to be permanently connected without occupying kitchen counter space.
The coffee maker, Bartesian machine, and everyday beverage supplies were moved to the pantry, freeing up the main kitchen to prepare food.
Wall repair prepares built-in installation
Removing parts of the original shelves exposed dozens of fastener holes that needed patching before the upper cabinetry could be installed. The wall repair created a clean background for the shelves designed to look integrated with the architecture.
Prepping the surface before adding custom storage makes the finished pantry look like original built-in millwork rather than a collection of assembled cabinets.
A simple cabinet box formed the upper structure
The upper shelves began as straight rectangular cabinet sections assembled from melamine panels. Adjustable shelf pin holes were incorporated throughout the vertical panels, allowing the storage height to be changed over time.
Instead of relying on expensive custom cabinets, standard cabinet construction created the framework for the entire project.
Vertical panels follow the sloped ceiling
Builder-grade pantries with angled ceilings often leave awkward triangular voids above traditional shelves. Instead of stopping at the bottom of the slope, the upper structure continued upwards and matched the roofline.
Following the architecture eliminated unused space while giving the pantry the appearance of custom-built furniture for the room.
Adjustable shelves line the entire wall
Additional shelves divide the structure into smaller storage zones for coffee supplies, grain containers, spices, baskets and pantry staples. Open compartments replaced the usual random spacing with wire shelving.
Adjustable supports also allow the pantry layout to change as storage needs evolve without having to rebuild the cabinet.
Angled upper shelves eliminate dead space
A finished upper floor extends the storage in the highest section below the sloped ceiling. Narrow triangular compartments also became practical storage for lightweight pantry items that previously had no dedicated space.
Each section of wall now contributes useful storage rather than being a decorative void.
Integrated lighting replaced each shelf
LED strip lighting installed below the shelves illuminates each storage level while highlighting the clean white cabinetry. Motion detection automatically activates lighting when someone enters the pantry, turning a previously dark storage room into a bright workspace.
Backlighting makes it easy to identify labels and pantry contents without adding visible fixtures under each shelf.
Hidden drawer organized coffee pods
A wide drawer below the coffee station holds single-serve coffee pods arranged within a custom insert, while keeping the countertop completely clear. Daily use supplies stay one step away without creating visual clutter around the coffee maker.
Organizing consumables within the drawers allows the beverage station to act like a dedicated coffee bar rather than just another storage shelf.
Custom shelving extends into the space behind the front shelves
Open shelves organize everyday pantry items from the front, while deep recesses behind them support separate wine racks built into the sloping wall. Stepped dividers create individual bottle storage without interfering with the shelves in front.
Building two storage levels into a single wall increases capacity without making the pantry too deep. Food remains accessible from the front while bottles occupy space that would otherwise be empty under the angled roof.
A before-and-after of how a wall was completely transformed
Wire shelving, hanging baskets and open supports gave way to continuous built-ins with lower cabinets, drawers, countertop workspace, adjustable shelving, integrated lighting and hidden wine storage. Each storage zone now has a dedicated purpose, from grain and dry goods to coffee equipment and beverages.
The pantry footprint remained the same, though replacing exposed wire shelving with cabinetry transformed the basic storage closet into a built-in pantry that functions as an extension of the kitchen rather than a separate utility space.
