This was the kind of room that time forgot about.
It’s kind of a hallway, and kind of a pass-through, and kind of a place where you have to take a few extra steps before you get to the bedroom.
When they were giving awards?
This room was the most awkward.
I never really knew what to do with it.
Most of the time, I would just go through it and not really pay that much attention to it.
until.
Until I decided I would make it into a storage area where I would put all the extra cleaning supplies and an ironing station and find a way to organize our laundry a little better.
And now?
The room is not so awkward anymore.
Here are before and after hallway makeovers and a few storage ideas you may want to incorporate into your own home.
First of all, let’s orient ourselves. This is an overview of the top of the stairs.
See that door on the left?
If you open that door?
You will see this room.
I knew I wanted stripes.
(Total aside: If you want to make a big impact in a room without spending a lot of money? Stripes are your best friend.
So now?

We pulled up the bark-and-wood flooring a while back and found wood underneath.
But the walls needed something different.
So we striped them.
These are six-inch stripes painted in SW Extra White and SW Repose Grey.

I didn’t take you through the whole project because I’ve drawn the stripes several times on this blog.

But to really turn on your stripes?
All you need is a few stripe painting tips.
Here are my top five tips for painting stripes.
1. Determine the width of your stripes
Read this before starting any stripe project.
Pin it or write it down so you remember, because this tip will make all the difference:
An odd number of stripes is correct. For thinner strips, divide by 9. For medium stripes, divide by 7, for thick stripes, divide by 9.
2. Make sure your bottom and top stripes are the same as your base color
If you see in the pictures, both our side bar and top bar are same color…..on purpose.
If you want to save time, your top stripe and bottom stripe should match your base color.
So much less tapping.
3. Tap properly
Mark the stripes you are not going to paint. I know this sounds elementary, but when you’re in the middle of painting, it’s easy to forget.
Also, make sure you tape inside the stripes you are not going to paint.
All the stripes you paint should be taped to the outside.
Tip number three comes from experience…..and re-taping. 🙂
4. Drag the tape to the wet paint
After you paint the stripes, for the crispest, cleanest stripes, pull the tape right away.
And when you remove the tape…pull it in the direction of the wet color.
This way, any drops of wet paint go back onto the strip.
5. Remember that your paint will look darker next to a lighter color
When choosing a paint color for your bar, go light.
For example, I painted the base coat SW Extra White. When I chose my grey, I went with a really light gray SW Repose Grey. I knew white would make the gray darker.
SW Repose Gray looks too dark on a wall against white.
If you take a 360-degree turn of the space, directly behind the door is a cabinet.
We found this cabinet SW Naval (Don’t you just love the pop of navy against gray)?
But inside?
That is where all the organization takes place.
If you open the door, you will see this.
I know right?
Who knew all that organization was going on behind closed doors?
Here are just a few of the ways I organized this space with this hallway makeover:
- I added a small ironing board (You can see its similar ironing boarde) and store it on top of the cabinet with the iron. Now we have an ironing board on every floor. No more dragging it up and down the stairs.
- I reused the shower caddy with this tension pole in the organization collection for the tall cabinet. This is where I am going to store the extra cleaners for the second floor. The shower caddy is like a built-in shelving unit, and on the other side there is still enough space to add a broom and dustpan. you Here you can see shower caddy.
- I added small, clear storage jars for cotton balls and Q-tips. you can See similar jars here.
- There is also a towel ring inside the door to provide easy access for dish towels.

Thinking of planning a fun one?
Add a towel ring to the inside of the door.
I came up with the idea of adding a towel ring to the inside of the door because I was tired of always looking for a cleaning towel to use.
Now, I just open the door, and it’s within easy reach.

But I found the cutest apothecary storage jars that would work perfectly for storing extra bathroom supplies.

On the wall opposite the large cabinet, is the laundry area.
It has always been a challenge for me.
my whole life
You would drop the clothes down into space through the hinged door, and then you would open the door and try to gather all the clothes when it was time to do the laundry.
Not now.
