Easy Ways to Automate Everyday Life (Without Rewiring Your Whole House)
When we bought our 1960s house, a “smart home” was the last thing on my mind. I envisioned futuristic new buildings with complex wiring and expensive systems, definitely not an older home like ours with creaky floors, weird wiring, and zero built-in tech.

But little by little we started adding simple upgrades as a basic smart home setup and something surprising happened: our home started working for us instead of the other way around.
The lights went on without a second thought. The windows open with the sunrise. Children could be invited to dinner without shouting. Even our house started smelling cozy on schedule (which feels like a minor miracle).
The best part is that most of these upgrades don’t require rewiring, major repairs, or technical wizardry. (Don’t believe me, I’m pretty sure I’m the least tech-savvy blogger on the planet. Computers kind of baffle me.)
If you live in an older home and want to make everyday life feel easier, smoother, and a little more relaxed, here are our favorite ways to make it happen.

Start with the command center: a digital family calendar
One of the biggest changes in our daily lives is the transition from paper chaos to a wall-mounted digital calendar.
We use ours Skylight Calendarbut any shared digital calendar works beautifully.

Why it helps:
- Everyone’s schedule syncs automatically
- Grocery lists + meal plans in one place
- Track duties for children
- Reminders for everything (meetings, trips, sports, etc.)
- It turns into digital art when idle so it looks pretty rather than techy
Keeps the whole household aligned without sticky notes everywhere.
You just mount it and turn it on. No special wiring required. (Although we did have a recessed socket installed to help hide the cable, but that’s completely optional for aesthetic purposes.)
Add cozy automation with smart fragrance
It sounds small, but it really changes the feeling of a home. We invested in Pura Smart Aroma Diffusers a few years ago and have been fans ever since.
Smart aroma diffusers (like Pura) allow you to:
- Schedule fragrances during the day
- Change the scents according to the season
- Adjust intensity from your phone
- Enjoy a cozy aroma without lighting candles
Morning = fresh and clean
Evening = warm and cozy
And they alert you on your phone when cartridges need to be replaced.
It’s one of those quiet little luxuries that make a home feel intentional.
Smart Contacts: The easiest way to get started
If you only try one thing, start with a smart plug. It makes anything you turn on instantly smart.
Smart plugs automate everyday things:
- The lamps are turned on at sunset
- The coffee maker starts in the morning
- The Christmas tree lights are operating as scheduled
- The wax heaters turn off automatically
- Fans, humidifiers, speakers, all hands free
No rewiring. No electrician. Just plug in, set schedules in your Alexa app, and go.

Smart lighting with Lutron switches and dimmers
This is where the home really starts to feel “smart”. Recommended by our electrician Lutron Smart Switches during our media room makeover a few years ago.
Smart switches allow you to:
- Control the lights from your phone or voice
- Creating light scenes (morning / evening / movie night)
- Schedule lights up automatically at sunset
- Dimmed lights without changing bulbs
- Keep working even with Wi-Fi outages
Many Lutron models do not require a neutral wire, making them ideal for older homes.
Improve security with a smart doorbell
A simple yet powerful addition. Most homeowners seem to have smart doorbells now, but if you’re one of the few who don’t, they provide so much peace of mind.
- See who’s at the door from anywhere
- Talk to visitors remotely
- Motion detection alerts
- Monitor packages
- Adds security without installing a full system
Especially useful for older homes that were not built with modern security.
Smart home security system
Along with the doorbell we have gained so much peace of mind since installing ours smart home security system with security cameras located around every exterior corner of our home so we can always monitor our safety from our phones.

Automatic curtains (yes, really)
Your curtains can literally close automatically at sunset with SwitchBot. Wild. Simply close the curtains at the touch of a button in the living room for a family movie night, or schedule the curtains to open in the bedrooms at sunrise.
With a small device like the SwitchBot curtain opener, you can:
- Wake up to natural light
- Automatic closing of the curtains at sunset
- Automate hard-to-reach windows
- Add calm to your day that syncs with your natural circadian rhythm
Pairing this with sunrise lighting makes mornings feel relaxed instead of rushed. (It’s even more impactful with a sunrise alarm clock.)
One of the most underrated upgrades for families! Instead of yelling up the stairs to communicate with your kids, you can sync Echo Dot Kids with an Echo Hub or Echo show for use as a wireless home intercom system.
Using Amazon Echo with Echo Dots in other rooms, you can:
- Call the kids to dinner without yelling
- Broadcast reminders throughout the house
- Talk instantly from room to room
- Play music anywhere
This makes an older home feel connected even with separate rooms and closed floor plans.

Smart thermostat = comfort + energy saving
Older homes are notorious for uneven temperatures and a smart thermostat helps balance things out. If you don’t have one yet, it’s definitely time to get involved.
- Learns your daily schedule
- Automatically adjusts the temperature
- Saves energy when you’re away
- Control from your phone anytime
Comfort is improved and energy loss is reduced without constant adjustment.
Robot vacuum: the everyday helper
This saves time every day. Unfortunately, a robot vacuum cleaner it doesn’t work very well for our home because we have high thresholds. But if we didn’t have that problem, we would definitely use one of these.
- Works on schedule
- Cleans while you’re out
- Great for wood floors
- Helps reduce dust in older homes
- A savior for pet and child hair
It’s like having a little helper who keeps things organized.
Smart Leak Detectors (Peace of Mind for Older Homes)
If you own an older home, intelligent leak detectors are mandatory! (We suffered a few leaks and learned the hard way before investing in them.)
Place near:
- Washing machine
- Dishwasher
- Boiler
- Under sinks
- Toilets
- HVAC drip line for condensation (If we had a leak detector here a few years ago, it would have saved us thousands of dollars from a major water disaster in our attic.)
You’ll get an instant phone alert if water is detected, potentially saving a lot of money on damage.

Intelligent garage door controller
Simple, but ah smart garage door opener is incredibly useful.
- Check if the garage is open from your phone
- Close remotely
- Open automatically when you get home
- Adds security to older garages
No more “Did I leave the garage open?” moments or you have to call your neighbor to ask him to close your garage.

Keyless simplicity with smart locks
It’s much easier to give friends or family (or even a trusted contractor) access to our home smart locksif we are not at home to let them go.
- No lost keys
- Unlock by code or phone
- Temporary guest codes
- Auto lock function
- Perfect for kids coming home from school
It’s convenience and peace of mind in one upgrade.
Smart blinds and shades (optional upgrade)
We put in smart shades a few years ago and they were nice BUT it was a pain to charge. These, however SmartWings Motorized Window Shades they have solar charging capability so you don’t even have to think about them.
Great for:
- bedrooms
- Sun baths
- Hard-to-reach windows
Schedule opening and closing for privacy, comfort and energy efficiency.

Real Magic: Smart Home Routines
Real transformation happens when everything works together. You can see my smart home setup here
Most smart devices can be connected to the Amazon Alexa app, so you can sync your entire home and set schedules that work seamlessly with your daily routine.
It’s so nice to just say “Good morning Alexa” and your entire home comes alive to serve you better.
Morning routine
- The curtains open
- The lights turn on quietly
- The coffee machine starts
- Read aloud the weather + calendar
- The thermostat is adjustable
Likewise, set up your home so that when you say “Goodnight, Alexa,” your home turns off for the evening. Or just set a schedule and it does everything automatically without you saying a word.
Night routine
- Lock the doors
- The lights are dim
- The curtains are closing
- The diffuser switches to an evening scent
- White noise (or soft music) is turned on.
That’s when a home really starts to work for you.
Here are all from smart home devices we use and/or recommend to optimize your home. Connect any device to your Alexa app and you’re good to go.
Turning an older home into a smart home doesn’t mean stuffing it with gadgets. It’s about taking the friction out of everyday life: fewer forgotten lights, fewer repetitive tasks, fewer minor annoyances.
We didn’t do it all at once. We added one upgrade at a time. And slowly our home became calmer, easier and more supportive of our daily life.
Once you start, it’s hard to stop.
