I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve sewn this triangle pouch/purse so far! These are cute, easy, and fun to sew, and they also make the cutest gifts. The great thing about sewing these triangle pouches is that you can make them as big or as small as you want, as the pattern is pretty straightforward.

All you have to do is adjust the measurements according to how you want your triangle bag to be.

For this sewing tutorial, I made this bag in a size that is perfect for small items or makeup supplies. You can even store a few small rolls of cotton or other sewing supplies in these pouches!

Instructions

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 1

01 – 02. Place your outer piece of fabric on top of the fabric batting. Then find the center point on both sides and mark a line using a fabric marker.

03. This is the design I will follow for quilting the fabric. Alternatively, quilt optional.

04. Go to the sewing machine and start quilting the piece.

05 – 06. Once you have finished quilting your entire piece, trim off the excess batting on the sides.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 2

07. Then cut the closure piece from the end of the zipper.

08. Open the zipper and remove the clasp. You should now have two separate pieces.

09. To add the zipper to the piece, start by placing one side of the zipper face down on the front piece of fabric. The right side of the zipper should be facing inwards as shown above.

10. Go ahead and place the other part of the zipper on the opposite side of the front. You can attach the zipper if needed.

11. Now sew the zipper to the detail.

12. Then take the lining piece and place it on top, right side in.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 3

13. Sew both sides.

14. Once the lining is sewn to the zipper on both sides, lift up the lining piece.

15. Fold the fabric to the other side so that the right sides are facing up.

16. Arrange the fabric by slightly pulling the zipper pieces from the sides.

17 – 18. Pin the fabric to secure the layers, then topstitch along the length of the zipper on both sides.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 4

19 – 20. Line up the two ends of the zipper and thread the fastener through it, then zip it in half.

21. To form the handle of the bag, take the piece of fabric tape and fold one side in half up.

22. Move the top edge down to align it with the center.

23-24. Fold the top back down and proceed to the sewing machine to sew the ribbon. Sew both sides of the ribbon if you prefer.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 5

25-26. After completing the strap, fold it in half.

27-28. Place the folded strip next to the left side of the zipper as shown. The folded edge should face inwards. You’ll want to sew the strap to the outside, not the lining.

29. Trim the excess zipper pieces so they are flush with the edge of the bag.

30. This is how it should look.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 6

31-32. Pull the lining to the side and turn the bag to the wrong side as shown above.

33. Using the bottom of the zipper as a guide, fold the outer piece of fabric in half as shown above.

34. Fold the lining piece in exactly the same way and align the piece.

35. Use pins to hold the layers together.

36. Sew the side using a 1cm seam.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 7

37. Turn the piece to the other side and fold it into a triangle shape.

38. Do the same with the lining part. You’ll want to start sewing on the batting side and work your way up to the lining part.

39. Leave an unstitched gap for turning.

40. Start sewing with a 1 cm seam allowance. Take your time when you get to the zipper area to prevent a broken needle.

41. When you’re done, your bag should look like this.

42. Open the unstitched part of the lining and pull the right side of the fabric.

DIY Triangle Pouch Part 8

43. Adjust the corners through the lining hole. Use a pen or tool to open each point.

45. To close the opening, fold the raw edges and pin them.

46. Sew up the opening and place the lining back into the bag. Now you can adjust the bag one more time, close the zipper and you’re done!
