With temperatures expected to reach 30 degrees this week, bin crews across the country will be packing up earlier than usual to beat the heat. With that in mind, it is doubly valuable-Check your bin day and schedule.
Somerset Council, Cheltenham Borough Council and South Kesteven District Council are some of the councils that have brought forward bin collection times, with many saying the changes will continue throughout the week.
Adjusting the schedule will help keep the bin crew safe from the heat by allowing them to work during the cooler part of the day. It was only in May that box trucks were breaking down due to high temperatures, so the new schedule should also help prevent heat-related delays and disruptions.
“Keeping our co-workers safe from dangerously hot working conditions is our absolute priority, so we’ve made the decision to change shift patterns. Crews will gather in the cooler part of the day and pause work when it’s not safe for our co-workers,” says Hannah Dees, external communications manager. Bristol Waste Company.

How to keep cans fresh in hot weather
If you have this heatwave (and Non insects which follows shortly), Sean Martin, Marketing Director Fresh Start WestBelow are their top tips shared:
1. Keep a separate food caddy: “Food waste is a primary cause of unpleasant odors and attracts flies, which can lead to the development of maggots in bins during periods of warm weather. Keeping food waste out of general waste bins, rinsing food packaging where practical and ensuring bin lids are closed can make a significant difference.”
If you don’t have a food waste bin yet, you can read our helpful guide Ways to dispose of food waste.
2. Maintain good bin hygiene: Sean recommends regularly cleaning and disinfecting your bins and keeping an eye out for any spills and leaks. It also helps to keep your bins stored in a shaded area.
Suitable for indoor and outdoor bins, these deodorizers release a fresh citrus scent while drying the bottom.
This activated charcoal filter helps remove unpleasant odors from your canister.
