STDC – Stacked Double Crochet Stitch
Stacked Double Crochet (STDC) is a clever little stitch to use at the beginning of a row instead of CH3 (Chain 3). You will ‘stack’ 2 single crochets on top of each other, thus creating a stitch that perfectly matches the height of a traditional double crochet.
First, it eliminates an unsightly gap at the edge of your blanket. If you use a conventional CH3 turning chain there is a gap (or hole). Second, it creates a neat, even and perfectly straight edge, which is very important for blankets. Third, you’ll have a clear V at the top, making it easier to see where to start your next row.

STDC (Stacked Double Crochet), DC in same stitch, *3 DC* in CH2 space. Continue to end of row with clusters of 3DC in chain spaces. 2 dc in last stitch.

Repeat rows 1-4 until you have 17 repetitions. For the last two rows, repeat rows 1 and 2 (two half double crochet rows).
Using a tapestry needle, weave in the ends. You’re done – admire your creation!

Should you add a border?
If you have leftover yarn, you can add a final border to the sides of the blanket. Crochet 2 rows of HDC, like the top and bottom of the blanket (2nd row BLO – only in the back loops).
