Bare lawns often leave large backyards with plenty of space but there are a few reasons to use them. Grass, a small patio, and sparse furniture restrained every outdoor activity while the rest of the yard remained open and undefined.

In a project shared by a Reddit user u/airport carpetOne family transformed the property into an enclosed outdoor living space organized around a sunken fire pit. Curved retaining walls, wide paver patios, planting beds, drainage improvements and fresh sod divide an open lawn into distinct areas for dining, gathering and play while maintaining generous green space.
A large lawn offers plenty of space but no purpose

A large grass lawn extends behind the house with a few designated activity areas. An existing concrete patio accommodates outdoor dining while much of the yard remains unused.
Tall evergreen trees screened neighboring properties, but the open lawn structure was lacking. Small fire pits and scattered bushes failed to organize the large footprint into useful spaces.
The existing patio ends abruptly on the lawn

The concrete patio stopped where the uneven grass began, leaving no transition between the house and the backyard. Outdoor furniture occupies only a small part of the available space.
A long rectangular layout emphasizes the empty lawn rather than creating spots throughout the yard.
Excavation removed almost the entire backyard surface

A mini excavator removed the grass and topsoil to establish the new grade. Large portions of the yard were reshaped before any hardscape material arrived.
The existing lawn disappeared as excavation created the foundations for retaining walls, drainage, patios and planting beds.
Grade changes define the future layout

Excavations revealed a curved outline for the lower patio and retaining wall. Stakes mark the future height while landscape fabric and drainage components prepare the base.
The massive project relies on moving the earth before paving begins, allowing each outdoor level to be connected by gentle transitions rather than steep slopes.
A compacted base prepares the patio foundation

Layers of crushed aggregate form the structural base beneath the future pavers. A wide gravel surface established a consistent height throughout the recreation area.
Proper foundation preparation supports heavy patio loads while reducing movement over time.
A retaining wall created two outdoor levels

Concrete wall blocks instead of bare excavation with permanent grade support. A curved retaining wall separates the upper lawn from the lower gathering area while introducing built-in seating.
Paver installation follows a sweeping curve rather than relying on straight edges, giving the patio a softer look.
A curved wall fire pit frames the patio

A retaining wall wraps around the low patio and doubles as additional seating. Matching coping blocks created a clean edge while unifying the large format pavers surface.
Wide steps connect both levels without disturbing the curved layout.
A sunken fire pit became the centerpiece

A circular fire pit anchors the lower patio with seating on each side. Bright yellow cushions contrast against gray pavers while a curved retaining wall surrounds the gathering space.
A covered swing chair, hammock and outdoor dining area divide the backyard into separate destinations without reducing open space.
Planting beds soften the hardscape

Mulched planting beds border concrete walks and patio edges with hydrangeas, flowering shrubs and low perennials. A river rock separates the plantings from the paved surface while landscape lighting lines the path.
Narrow beds introduce color without reducing the size of the lawn.
Finished backyard balances open lawn and outdoor living

A large area of grass remains available for children while the hardscape occupies only a portion of the yard. A dining patio, fire pit lounge, planting beds and a curved retaining wall divide the space into functional zones.
Mature trees continue to provide privacy, but the structured hardscape transforms how the backyard functions from one end of the property to the other.
Open lawn maintained space for games and gatherings

A large lawn is the biggest feature of the backyard despite the extensive hardscape renovation. Patios, planting beds and retaining walls occupy the perimeter, leaving an area of uninterrupted grass for entertaining, pets or future activities.
Having a large open area prevents the backyard from feeling crowded. Mature trees, fresh sod and defined landscaped borders frame the lawn while new recreational spaces are attached around its edges.
A before and after show how zoning changed everything

Construction focuses on more than replacing grass with pavers. Curved retaining walls, wide steps, separate seating areas, planting beds, and open lawns can make an empty backyard feel smaller without dividing it into separate outdoor zones.
Each section now serves a different purpose. Fire pit conversation, outdoor dining, shaded lounging and open play space exist within the same footprint, proving that thoughtful layout can transform a typical backyard without adding square footage.
