I have tested a lot Smart home gearAnd the biggest friction point is usually installation (especially for door locks). The Nookie Smart Lock is flipped on its head. Instead of replacing your entire deadbolt, it installs inside your existing lock, essentially replacing the thumb turn. In my case, setup took a few minutes: mount it, connect it to the app, and you’re done. No complicated wiring, no locksmith-level effort. It’s an instant win for casual DIYers (and renters!).

Daily use

Once installed, this is the day-to-day experience Smart lock Really stands out. The responsiveness of the app is excellent. Locking and unlocking from your phone feels almost instantaneous, which isn’t always the case with smart locks. There is no awkward delay or second guessing as to whether it works. That alone makes it feel more refined than many competitors I’ve tested.

Physically, it is just as impressive. The inner winding mechanism is a thick, stainless steel dial that feels smooth and solid in the hand. Every time you manually lock or unlock a door, it feels deliberate and high-quality, not plasticky or cheap. It’s also really good looking hardware, which is more important than you might think, especially if you have a nice front door and want to avoid ugly appliances sticking out.

charging

Charging is handled via a magnetic cable, which is a nice touch in theory. It turns on easily and feels premium, but it’s proprietary. Since you’ll only need to charge it once or twice a year, it’s not a huge deal, but it does mean you’ll want to keep track of that particular cable. I’d personally prefer the standard USB-C option for convenience, as I’m not a big fan of having a single charging cable for just one device.

Optional subscription

There is also an optional paid upgrade tier. The lock works perfectly fine without it, but a “Pro” version is available for about $30 and covers 3 years. It’s not a subscription in the traditional sense, and the price is reasonable, but it still factors in how many advanced features you want to unlock.

Keypad add-on

Nuki also offers an optional keypad, which I tested alongside the lock. It’s a separate purchase for about $160, though you can bundle it with the lock at a discount. Setup is as straightforward as the lock, and once it’s installed, it adds a lot of flexibility, especially if you want multiple users or don’t want to rely entirely on your phone.

The keypad supports both PIN code and fingerprint access, which worked reliably in my testing. It’s a convenient way to let family members, guests or service providers in without handing over physical keys or managing app access. Fingerprint unlock in particular feels fast and seamless, making it one of the more practical smart lock add-ons I’ve used.

That said, the price for the accessory is on the high side, so it won’t be necessary for everyone. But if you like the idea of keyless entry without pulling out your phone every time, it’s a worthwhile upgrade that makes the whole system feel more complete.

If you want a smart lock that avoids the usual installation headaches and works instantly, then Nuki Smart Lock This is one of the simplest recommendations I can make. It’s fast, well-designed, and really fun to use—exactly what smart home tech should be.
