Want a cake stand that looks warmer than the glossy versions most shops fill? Many dessert stands look too polished or too decorated once they’re on the table. This project keeps setup simple with two household items: a wooden board and a ceramic bowl.

After cutting the wood into circles, sanding the edges into a smooth shape, and attaching the bowl down, the material stopped looking different and began to read like a piece of sculpture. The finished stand fits boho tablescapes, farmhouse kitchens, party setups and rustic centerpiece styles without overdesigning.
Sanded wood changed the whole look
The biggest difference came from the edge treatment.
Rather than leaving the wood thick and sharp, the rounded edges softened the silhouette and made the stand feel closer to the handmade serving pieces found in small decor shops. Visible grain also adds warmth that painted cake stands often lose.
Once oiled, the wood takes on a richer contrast while keeping the natural texture visible.

The bowl became the base
Using a ceramic bowl instead of a built-in pedestal keeps the structure simple.
The curved shape lifted the wood top without adding heavy visual weight, and the glossy ceramic finish balanced the wood’s rough texture. Attached to the bottom with plumber’s putty or epoxy, the bowl creates a clean pedestal form using something already found in many kitchens.
Once assembled the stand looks more like table decor than a craft project.

It works out of the cake
The same setup also works for pastries, candles, fruit, charcuterie or party centerpieces.
Different wood cuts and bowl shapes change the final look without changing the concept. Round tops became popular because they soften the form on the table, but square boards, raw-edged wood or shallow ceramic bases create different styles with the same approach.

The biggest surprise is how little the final piece still resembles the original material. Once assembled, the wood top and ceramic base read more like small-batch decor pieces than household leftovers, especially when paired with candles, linen runners or layered serving boards.
