Located at the Eric Parry Architects-designed 1 Five Fields Square, the impressive bones of this apartment – high ceilings, tall skirting boards and a clean, expansive layout – provided Ben and his team with an impressive canvas. “We wanted to create an interior that felt immersive,” he says. “We went for an eclectic and unexpected mix of materials. Think leather, heavy velvet, light linen, alpaca, light wood, dark antique oak, vintage glass, brass accents and delicate metal chain detailing. It all comes together to give an almost touch of madness, a nod to Chelsea’s artistic heritage.”
The focal point of the living room – where reupholstered Scarper ‘Monk’ dining chairs from mid-century accompany a bespoke dark-stained oak dining table – is massive sectional sofa in pale linens that cut through the dreary space and set the tone for a study in contrasts that is at the heart of this London flat. “We wanted to create a home that felt lived in from the start,” Ben explains of why he mixed contemporary pieces with antiques and vintage finds. “It’s this combination of old and new that brings in the irregularities and patina, creating a sense of history that feels welcoming.”
