When I got engaged, a group of women got together to throw me a recipe shower.
It was my mother’s idea.
At that time, I was very My red lipstick and dear Abby and my huge monogrammed train And not so much about cooking.
But I love my mother.
So I went.
Only a little reluctantly.
There were recipes for potato soup, chicken tori, chicken n dumplings and ham-filled party puffs, and my mother’s teriyaki meatballs.
The ladies smiled so sweetly when they handed me those cards. Each recipe was neatly printed with chicken on these blue checkered cards, optimistically titled “Good Ole Homestyle Country Cookin'”.
*sigh*
I didn’t want them to break it.
I was not planning on cooking or baking. And whenever I was invited to a potluck or party where I had to bring a dish, I would pull out the recipe folder and look at the recipes and then put them back because they all seemed so complicated. I should ask my mom if everyone can bring a no bake recipe.
They are the best.
That’s what got me through a million potlucks.

Especially when it’s a zillion degrees here in Texas and turning on the oven seems like the worst idea in the world.

Yes, please.
