Here are four quick and easy summer centerpiece ideas for your dining room table using a simple basket and beautiful seasonal botanicals.

The best thing about summer is the natural beauty it offers us to bring inside our homes. This summer, I’m leaning towards a light, organic and pretty approach to decorating. Seasonal ease That’s my summer motto! Our dining room sits at the heart of our open concept home, so a beautiful centerpiece there makes a real difference in how the whole space feels.
I love decorating with baskets in the summer. There is something so simple and natural about them. So I grabbed a basket that was just the right size for our round dining room table and started thinking about how to fill it with beautiful summer herbs.
The best part of these arrangements, besides the fact that they come together almost effortlessly, is that they work beautifully on any flat surface that needs a little focal point. Think foyer tables, coffee tables, bookcases or even bathroom counters.
Today, I’m sharing a summer basket centerpiece that can be done in four different ways. Each one is simple, seasonal and so cute!
Grab a basket

Baskets are one of the most versatile and charming accent pieces you can have in your home. They add a layer of texture, warmth, and natural interest to any space, and they work beautifully in every season.
When choosing a basket for a centerpiece, proportion and scale are most important. You want it to feel deliberate on your table, not so small that it gets lost, and not so big that it crowds the space.
🌿 Tip Box: A good rule of thumb is to choose a basket that is about one-third the width of your table. Those proportions feel balanced and leave enough room for everything around it to breathe.
The basket I use is one that I usually use for books. It’s sturdy, has a beautiful braided woven design, and has cutout handles on the sides that add a nice detail. It’s not the perfect basket for a centerpiece, but it works beautifully, and that’s part of the charm. Use what you have!
Summer basket with houseplants

This summer basket centerpiece idea started with a visit to my favorite local Amish greenhouse, a few miles down the road. I was looking for something fresh, simple and natural to bring to our dining room table, and I knew I’d find it there.
A basket filled with easy to care for houseplants felt perfect for summer. Plants bring such a living, breathing quality to a space, and there’s something so quietly beautiful about greenery on a dining room table.

Our dining room gets amazing natural light, so I knew whatever I chose would thrive with just a little water and attention.
I chose three Swedish ivy plants for the basket. Swedish ivy is a beautiful, simple plant with soft, trailing vines that spread most gracefully over the edges of the basket. To keep things simple and practical, I left the plants in their nursery pots and built small bowls under each one to catch any excess water. Nothing leaks into the basket or onto the table that way.

🌿 Tip Box: If you plan to keep plants as a centerpiece all summer, consider repotting your plants in old terracotta pots. They look more intentional and beautiful than nursery pots, and they add another layer of natural texture to the arrangement.
Summer basket with geraniums

It didn’t take long for me to start thinking about how beautiful a few blooms would look annually in a basket on the dining room table. I use annuals in our house all summer long. It’s one of my favorite and cheapest ways to bring seasonal color and life indoors.
So I headed back to the Amish nursery and came home with three beautiful white geraniums. White is a clean, fresh choice for summer, and it works with almost any color palette in a room.

Geraniums are incredibly forgiving and will last for weeks indoors with a little care and bright light. I always think of them as long lasting cut flowers that are still in their pot!
To soften the look and add some airiness, I tucked in another summer annual with delicate, lacy blooms. That combination of full-round geranium heads and wispy filler gives the basket a very pretty, natural feel.
🌿 Tip Box: When using flowering annuals indoors, choose a spot with bright indirect light and water them when the top inch of soil feels dry. They will reward you with weeks of beautiful flowers.

Like the Swedish ivy arrangement, I kept all the plants in their nursery pots with small bowls to catch the water. You can see the edges of the pots through the opening of the basket handle and honestly, I don’t mind it one bit. That’s part of the charm.
Pick your favorite summer annuals, or mix a few together, and enjoy their beauty on your table all season long.
Summer basket with beautiful cut flowers

Adding cut flowers to a basket makes for one of the prettiest and easiest summer centerpieces you can make. There is something naturally elegant about a basket overflowing with blooms on a dining room table.
Our oakleaf hydrangeas are just starting to bloom in the garden, and I can’t wait to cut a few and use them in this particular arrangement very soon. Getting fresh from the garden to the table is as easy as seasonal!

But in the meantime, I reached for my favorite faux peacock. These real touch white hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful and just as convincing. If you didn’t know they were wrong, you’d never guess.
To arrange them, I cut the stems and placed the hydrangeas in three mason jars built inside the basket. Jars keep the flowers upright and help them spread naturally, giving the arrangement a full, lush look without any floral foam or complicated technique.
🌿 Tip Box: Using several small containers inside a basket, such as mason jars or bud vases, is a simple trick to beautifully arrange cut flowers or faux stems. It’s quick and easy to swap out blooms whenever you want a fresh look.
I also have faux white pennies on the way, and I’m already excited to give them their turn in the basket. Peonies and hydrangeas together in a summer basket? It will be very beautiful.
Whether you use fresh flowers from your garden, blooms from the market, or pretty faux stems, a basket full of cut flowers is one of the quickest and easiest summer centerpieces for your dining room table.
