How to sew a pot holder with a top pocket

In this tutorial I will guide you how to sew a pot holder with a top pocket step by stepso you can easily make your own.

This simple project will help you create something you’ll actually use in your kitchen – it’s a fantastic project for beginners!

Not only does it protect your hands from hot pots and pans, but the pocket also gives you an extra grip when lifting a pot lid or pan off the stove.

Instructions

Begin by positioning the looped fabric strip wrong side up.
Then fold the bottom edge to the center.

Fold the top edge down to the center.

Bring the two ends together as shown above and then use a bobby pin to hold the fold together.

Go to the sewing machine and sew both ends of the ribbon. Then fold the strip in half to form a loop. Sew the two ends of the ribbon together.

Your cycle is now created. Put that aside for now.

To create the pot holder pattern, cut a piece of paper measuring 20cm x 20cm / 7.87″ x 7.87″. Next, take a small round object and draw a curve along the four sides of the square. Finally, carefully cut along the curved edges.

Use the paper template to outline and cut out the fabric for the inner piece.

Place the inner part on a heat-resistant batting (use one or two layers depending on the thickness). Make sure the batting is slightly larger than the inner piece of fabric.

Now it’s time to quilt the fabric. Feel free to choose any design that inspires you!

Go ahead and remove the excess batting from the sides.

Place it wrong side up.

Get your printed top fabric (38cm x 28cm / 14.96in x 11.02in).

Take the top of the cotton wool and place it on one side. You can use 1-2 pieces of cotton wool depending on the thickness. Then fold over to the other side of the fabric.

Place this top piece over the inner quilted piece of fabric as shown above. The folded side of the top should be facing inwards.

Pin the top piece to the inner piece. Now you will want to sew the pieces together as indicated

Go ahead and sew the two pieces together using a small seam allowance.

Remove the excess fabric from the sides of the holder.

Your pot holder should look like this by now.

Take the loop you made earlier and place it on the side or top corner of the holder. Turn the part with the loop inside out.

Sew the loop to the edge of the pot holder and then cut off the excess.

Next, take your bottom fabric (25cm x 25cm / 9.84″ x 9.84″) and place it on top of the top, making sure right sides are facing in. Pin the fabric in place, then turn the piece to the wadding side.

On one side of the holder, mark a small area for the opening (7 – 10 cm / 3.93 inches). Do not sew here.

Start sewing your planter by following the curved edge. Use a 1cm seam allowance.

After sewing, trim the excess fabric on the sides.

Then make small cuts around the holder.

Use the unstitched opening to pull the fabric right side out.

With the right side facing you, use a pen or finger to shape the corners of the pot holder through the hole, making sure they are well rounded for a smooth finish.

Tuck the raw edges of the opening inward and secure with a pin or sewing clip. If you wish, you can slightly press the pot holder.

Finally, go to the machine and add topstitching to the pot holder. This should also seal the opening.

And that’s it! Congratulations – you’ve just sewn your very own top pocket pot holder!
