1. Hide your cans in a kitchen drawer
Since my galley kitchen is so narrow and short, the drawer under the sink is the only place I can realistically store my cans. I have plenty of other closets, so I don’t miss this storage space, and I love how it blends in with the rest of the units.
To keep your bins organized and in one place, you can purchase drawer frames and compatible bins that slot into position. These usually come with a handle, making it easy to lift them in and out when you need to empty them out into your main wheelie bin. This idea works particularly well Manage waste when you don’t have an outdoor space.

If you hate the way your wheelie bins look on the outside of your house, a wood shop offers the perfect solution – and they can even be painted the same color as your exterior or fence to blend in.
Not only does it add curb appeal to an otherwise unattractive item, but it also helps keep your bin clean, dry and secure, making it less likely to get unwanted. Insects come in.

3. Label your containers to make bin day easier
If you live with young children (or are particularly forgetful like me), labeling your bins with stickers makes it easier to remember what goes where – especially because Recycling rules have changed recently.
Becky Purchas, a professional decluttering and organizing coach, recommends giving each bin its own category to “avoid clutter” and help recycle properly throughout the home. This will help prevent unwanted fines from putting items in the wrong bin.
4. Think outside the kitchen
It’s easy to center your household recycling around your kitchen, but don’t forget about your bedroom, bathroom and home office, which collect more waste than you might think.
Having a dual-compartment bin for general waste and recycling will make it easier to sort later in line and reduce the amount you throw away in a hurry (I’m guilty of this!) Things like toilet roll tubes and paper scraps build up quickly, so having the right bin to put them in is key.
“Think beyond the kitchen. Place small recycling bins in the bathroom, home office, or other room that generate their own recycling to make sorting easier throughout the home,” says Becky Purchas.
5. Build a dedicated recycling station
To make recycling as easy as possible, Becky Purchas recommends keeping your bins, liners and cleaning supplies in one place so everything you need is within reach. “It saves time and keeps the process consistent,” she explains.
As well as a dedicated space for supplies, you’ll also need an area where you can dry recyclables once you’ve cleaned them. Many people forget this, but putting a wet jar in your bin will encourage it Ghat growth and foul odors, so it’s definitely worth investing in a drying mat (like the one below).
“I always say that your bin setup should work with your routine, not against it,” adds Kelly Moore, Cleaning with meaning. “If it looks organized and is easy to use, your family is more likely to stick with it. It’s about creating a system that feels effortless while also doing the right thing for the environment.”
