How to decorate your patio or deck for summer:

Create a focal point. We added this propane fire pit, which creates a comfortable and cozy focal point for the surrounding seating area layout.

Include a heat source

The fire pit also doubles as a heat source, making it more enjoyable to enjoy time outside on cooler days and evenings. It also helps extend the season of our deck patio area.

Use comfortable furniture

We invested in a set of good quality patio furniture a few years ago and it has held up very well. If your area is not under cover, you will want to cover it or bring a cushion for the winter months in most areas. Adding comfortable pillows and throws also helps create a cozy feeling in your outdoor seating area.

It feels cozy large areas small

By placing our furniture around the fire pit and grounding it all with rugs, we made our good-sized patio area even cozier. With the high vaulted ceiling it can easily feel a bit cramped, but the grouping of furniture we used is comfortable and close together.

Add pops of color

I love the pops of color outside, and you can go brighter than you would indoors, because the color looks a lot less saturated in natural light. This year I added a pop of terracotta/coral tones to my dark blue patio cushions from last season.

Lots of plants!

I think it’s really the greenery that makes the deck decor stand out; And it’s also probably the easiest to add. I love doing lots of foliage plants – especially ferns! They add so much warmth and texture to a space. I also added a few pots of flowers, but we don’t really enjoy them until late in the season, when the ferns look cozy all season long.
