Do rooms in your home ever get on your nerves?

a little

At least once a week?

Oh, good.

Come sit with me.

Last week, when we returned from the Cape,

I was generally uncomfortable with my house (especially the kitchen).

It doesn’t behave. He needed a haircut. It was over-satisfied and his bangs needed to be trimmed. It was like me in 1997. Highwater and wearing a poncho with dark roots that needed touching up.

And then?

I did something that completely changed my perspective.

(Gross aside: this involves a new kitchen runner I picked up, but I have a new way of looking at things for all of us).

A bright kitchen with a marble island, wicker stools, shelves neatly arranged with trays and baskets of white flower vases, and a sign about flowers and strawberries in the background.

A framed chalkboard has a hanging poster depicting colorful pictures of bird eggs, nests and birds, set against a white wall in a home interior.

I pressed pause and stepped out myself.

And my house.

I went out the front door and rang my front doorbell and waited for someone to answer and then I went inside.

As I was a visitor.

As I was staying only for sweet tea and conversation.

Like I had never met the house or my kitchen before.

ever.

A bright kitchen with white cabinets, a gray island, wicker stools, wooden floors, a window with a bamboo shade, a chandelier, fresh flowers in a vase and lemons in a bowl on the counter.

I looked at the kitchen with new eyes.

I saw all the things I liked (Like the color of this kitchen island and the stools and the chandelier and the light from the window).

And all the stuff that needs to be fixed is ignored (Like the kitchen roof, which leaks water from the upstairs drain).

That’s a story for another day.

I ignored the things that me and my high-watered, poncho-wearing, need-a-highlight self would normally focus on.

I ignored the negatives.

Like he wasn’t even there.

And when I did it?

Something surprising happened.

Something I did not expect.

Something that made me laugh out loud.

Right then and there in the middle of the 1908 kitchen, I fell in love with my house all over again.

It was the first time I saw my future husband in the room with his brown hair and his smile and his sparkling brown eyes and his men’s jacket.

My heart was beating fast.

And it was love at first sight.

Bright kitchen with gray island, wicker stools, chandelier and decorative rugs. White cabinets, flowers and baskets add a cozy, farmhouse feel. Natural light streams in from the window.

I like it so much that I want to give it a few updates.

Just a few tweaks to make it feel special.

Starting with this new runner.

Remember when I Shared some of my favorite washable runners? And I asked you for your favorite?

This Runner won hands down.

A white and beige checkered rug with a floral border is placed on the brown wooden floor. Only the corner of the mattress is visible in the image.

I was surprised how soft it is.

Every other runner I’ve had this way was rough on the feet.

But the design on this runner is printed, not woven, so it’s extra soft and the colors are so pretty and it’s completely washable, so if it gets dirty I can just throw it in the wash.

I got a 2′ x 8′ for the space (I have a 2′ x 6′ linked here).

you A khaki and white runner can be seen here.

A corner of a patterned rug is lifted, revealing a dark rug pad on the wooden floor below.

Many of you have asked what rug pad I use for a runner like this.

This rug pad is my favorite.

It holds the rug perfectly in place and if your rug is a little small you can cut it to fit.

I Ordered a 2′ x 8′ runner here.

A vase of white flowers on a wicker tray, a white pitcher, two decorative pears and two stacked books on a marble countertop.

Another little update I added to the summer kitchen?

This vase from Target.

It’s so hard to find an oversized vase like this, so when I see one, I try to snap it up.

A white ceramic vase with a textured surface holds white hydrangeas and greenery, placed on a woven wicker tray next to a white pitcher.

Here is a close-up of the vase.

It looks like handmade pottery and is from the Hearth & Hand Magnolia line at Target.

It measures approximately 12″ tall and 10″ wide.

you You can see it here.

I filled it The hydrangea And The green branches.

Another tip I have for a summer reset?

Buy your fridge.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again – there are tons of fun home decor items hiding in your fridge.

I added a lemon bowl to the kitchen island.

(Total aside: this is wrong if you don’t want to buy a fridge or just don’t want your lemons to last long).

you Here you can see the lemon.

A small white vase holds red and pink zinnia flowers, placed on a woven wicker tray. A yellow lemon bowl is partially visible in the background.

And don’t forget about fresh flowers.

They make any room feel like summer.

My husband picked these for me from his zinnia garden that he had growing in the back yard.

He planted five different types of zinnias and I am so excited to have zinnias in the kitchen all month.

A gray hutch features white dishes, small potted plants and farmhouse-style decor. A wicker basket sits on the top shelf. A rustic sign on the shelves reads "U-Peak Cut Flowers Strawberry.

So today, I want you to try it.

I want you to walk out your front door and ring your doorbell and walk into your home like you’ve never met it before.

(BTW, I can literally feel you rolling your eyes at this moment).

I want you to move in and focus on your home as you fall in love with it.

Architecture.

This floor.

the windows.

That beautiful chair you found on the side of the road.

I know it’s stupid.

I understood.

i understand

Just try it and see what happens. I would love to hear. 🙂
