Many front porch renovations begin with new decking. Years of paint, weathering and heavy foot traffic often leave the original boards looking ready for replacement. This project took a different approach by restoring the existing wood instead.
Reddit user u/snowball rebellion Transformed the worn front porch into an outdoor living space by sanding the original decking, applying a clear cedar stain, updating the brick and siding with a darker color, and adding lighting, seating and a TV. Instead of ripping out the old boards, the remodel revealed that they still had plenty of life left.
Old paint hides the condition of the deck
The covered porch already had solid framing, but thick layers of worn paint covered the floor and ceiling. The space felt unfinished, with exposed foam insulation, aging finishes and little reason to spend time outside.
Instead of assuming that the decor had reached the end of its life, the homeowner decided to find out what was left underneath.
Sanding revealed the original wood
After cleaning the deck, the homeowner rented a floor sander and worked through several grits to remove the old finish. The fresh wood underneath looked much better than expected, making replacement unnecessary.
Because the porch remained covered, the original boards remained in good condition despite their poor appearance.
The transparent stain brought back the grain
Instead of covering the wood again with paint, the restored boards received Thompson’s Waterseal Transparent Natural Cedar Stain. The first coat looked bright, then settled into a more natural cedar tone as it dried.
The homeowner applied multiple coats to create a uniform finish throughout the porch.
Dark paint makes the wood stand out
Warm cedar floors contrast with black brick, dark siding and white trim. Recessed lights in the tongue-and-groove ceiling brighten the porch after sunset while keeping the ceiling natural.
Simultaneously, a darker finish draws more attention to the restored wood compared to previously painted surfaces.
Outdoor living has changed the space
The remodel added comfortable seating, hanging plants, a ceiling fan, and a ceiling-mounted television on flip-down brackets. The porch now serves as an outdoor living room rather than a simple entrance to the house.
The television folds away when not in use, which helps keep the ceiling uncluttered.

Matching furniture, simple decor and reclaimed wood flooring give the porch a complete look without changing its footprint. Natural cedar adds warmth while dark walls and brick frame the seating area.
What began as a venerable gateway is now a place to relax, watch sports or spend time with friends and family.

The biggest change didn’t come from the new decking. It came from keeping the original boards, removing years of old paint, and allowing the natural wood to be the main feature of the porch.
