Fun ways to use your forest animal painted rocks

I was inspired to create a variety of simple painted rock animals that still bring a smile to my face every time I see them. Aren’t they adorable?

Foxes, owls and bears can be used in many fun ways:

Leave them outside in your garden or place your potted plants indoors;
Scatter them around your home to decorate;
Use them as paper weights or napkin weights;
Make story rocks to entertain children while telling stories or reading their favorite books;
They also make a great gift for a loved one (see our Owl family portrait craft) or an unsuspecting neighbor (mercy rocks)!

Easy Animal Rock Painting Tips for Beginners

Not being great artists ourselves, we like to paint rocks with simple designs that are fun for the whole family, including beginners. They don’t take a lot of time and here are some tips before getting started:

Choose smooth, light-colored stones; The paint will glide smoothly and the colors will stand out;
Have extra stones on hand for practice. Alternatively, practice drawing the animals on a piece of paper first!
The right paint makes all the difference: lower quality paint is thinner and more likely to streak (or require multiple coats). We have the full A guide to the best paints for rock painting If you are not sure where to start.

Best supplies for painting woodland animal rocks

Smooth rocks, medium size, flat on one side (we sell in Our Etsy shop)
Acrylic paint brushes, various sizes and tips
Decorte Americana Multi-Surface Satin Paint (our favorite for rocks)
Paint pen (optional, for fine details)

How to paint faux rock

Note: Make sure the paint is completely dry between each stage of the painting process. Either use a blow dryer or let the paint air-dry to speed up the process.

for youT, using orange paint, draw a triangular shape for the fox’s face in the center of the smooth surface of your rock.

Using a fine tip brush, paint the sides of the fox’s face from the top of the orange to the bottom using white.

With a fine tip brush, paint the ears, eyes and nose using black paint. Add a small white dot to each eye for a highlight (this step is not shown here).

How to paint owl rocks

To start your cute owl, paint a face shape in the center of the rock using gray paint. Start with two circles side by side and then add small ears on top.

Using white paint, draw two large circles as shown for the eyes of the owl Then add a little diamond shape below with orange color for the beak.

Finally, paint the small circle-shaped pupils using black paint. Add white dots for accents.

How to paint a bear rock

Make a B using brown paintDraw a large circle in the center of the rock for the face of the ear first and then two smaller circles on top for the ears. Expand the larger circle to form the top of the head.

Mix brown and white paint together to create a light brown and use it to paint the snout and inner ears with a general circle shape.

To finish, paint the eyes and nose using black paint with a fine tip paint brush (or paint pen). Add a small dot to the center of each eye with white paint for a highlight.
