The homeowner retrofitted the refrigerator into the garage wall, replaced the angled island with a large workstation, added floor-to-ceiling custom storage and completed most of the project without hiring a contractor.
An angled island dominates the entire kitchen
The original island dictates how each function in the room is done. The cooktop occupies the center, leaving little uninterrupted work space for preparing or serving food. Its angular shape also narrowed the circulation path while ultimately providing seating for only one person.
Oak cabinetry surrounds the room, but it was difficult to make the most of the available floor area. A refrigerator projects into the aisle, while built-in desks and scattered storage pieces occupy valuable wall space without adding much function.
The cabinets finally reached the ceiling
Instead of stopping a foot below the ceiling, the new cabinetry continues the crown molding. Upper glass cabinets occupy the highest level, creating storage for seasonal dishes while eliminating dust-collecting gaps that surrounded the original kitchen.
The homeowner built cabinet boxes before adding Conestoga Madison doors and drawer fronts. Brass hardware, integrated lighting and a painted finish replace the heavy oak look without changing the room’s footprint.
The island became a continuous working surface
The new island replaces the angular layout with a long rectangle that fulfills almost every kitchen function. A thick quartzite slab extends from end to end without obstructing the cooktop surface, creating ample space for baking, serving or gathering.
Large drawers organize cookware, while the built-in microwave hides under the countertop rather than taking up cabinet space or sitting on the counter.

Migrating the range has changed the entire workflow. The Wolf dual-fuel range now sits under a custom hood with uninterrupted counter space on either side, making it easy to prepare ingredients before cooking.
A decorative tile panel frames the pot filler without overpowering the rest of the backsplash. Surrounding cabinets keep utensils, spices and cooking utensils close to the cooking area.
The backsplash created three distinct zones
Instead of covering each wall with one tile, the kitchen uses three related surfaces. White Zellige-style subway tile forms the main backdrop, a patterned panel highlights the kitchen wall, and surrounding materials maintain visual continuity without repeating the same finish everywhere.
The homeowner chose a decorative insert as one of the few splurge items because it turns the kitchen wall into the focal point of the room.
The beverage station got its own sink
One side of the kitchen now functions as a separate beverage station. A compact prep sink, espresso machine, illuminated glass cabinets and a blue tile backsplash allow coffee and beverages to stay out of the main cooking area.
Glass-front cabinets display stemware while deep drawers below organize bar accessories that previously competed for kitchen space.
The refrigerator stopped blocking the walkway
One of the biggest structural changes took place behind the cabinet. The homeowner pushed the refrigerator into the garage wall, allowing it to sit almost flush with the surrounding cabinetry instead of extending into the aisle.
To make the change possible, the refrigerator wall uses shallow cabinets, which create a wide passage without enlarging the kitchen. According to the homeowner, this single decision opened up the room more than expected.
Hidden drawers use a toe kick
Storage continues under the cabinet where toe-kick drawers protrude from the recessed base. These shallow compartments hold cookie sheets, table linens, or kitchen utensils that would normally require dedicated cabinet space.
The drawers disappear completely when closed, turning an overlooked area into useful storage without changing the look of the cabinetry.

The finished design replaces separate workstations with a connected layout where preparation, cooking, serving and cleanup each have dedicated space. Tall cabinetry, integrated storage, layered lighting and furniture-style details create a kitchen that feels spacious without changing the room’s footprint.
Every elevation serves a purpose, from a beverage center and display cabinet to a large island and custom range wall. Rather than relying on decorative improvements alone, renovations improve how the kitchen functions from one end of the room to the other.
