Coastal bedroom design before and after

A bright bedroom with a white bed, soft bedding, two wooden nightstands, a dresser, a chair and a patterned mattress. Large windows with curtains let in natural light. A ceiling fan and framed art adorn the space.

Can you clear your calendar for today?

Because my mother’s bedroom is finished.

We want to say thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the input and emails and ideas and suggestions on this room.

Just a reminder, in case you missed it a few weeks ago, this is what the room looked like when we started.

And here are some details about the room and the requests that my mother had:

  • There is a surviving ceiling fan that remains
  • The room measures approximately 13.5′ x 13.5′
  • The floor is lined with plywood (and we’ll cover most of it with a rug instead of this little rug she has).
  • The walls are painted SW pure white (and we keep the paint color).
  • She didn’t want to paint any antiques in the room
  • She wanted to add some hand-painted pieces to the space
  • She wanted a new bed, a new couch, a new mattress and new curtains

We talked through his vision and I put together three design plans.

Here is the design (With input from my mother), The space was mocked up as you can see here.

And now?

Do you want to see how the room turned out (I have also shot another video)?

Oh, good.

Because now?

It looks like this.

Bright bedroom with white walls, blue and white bed, patterned rug, wooden furniture, ceiling fan and framed artwork above the bed. Sunlight pours in through large curtained windows.

I tried to take it from a certain angle so you can see the difference.

Can you believe it?

(I want to apologize for all the capital letters, but I’m so excited).

And in surprising news?

I changed the whole room (including bed and pillows and new bedding and new curtains and lamps)….

….drum roll, please.

For only $400.

A bedroom mood board with a blue and white floral theme, featuring a patterned rug, a white lamp with gold accents, floral bedding, striped and floral pillows, and white curtains with blue trim.

She ended up choosing Design Plan #2.

Except we changed the curtains for the prettiest blue and white ones that look hand painted.

Wait until you see a close-up of them in the room.

Here are the sources we used for the original design:

A white-legged, blue-striped upholstered stool with a detailed blue-and-white floral patterned rug is partially visible in the upper right corner.

//Blue medallion mattress//

Let’s start with the mattress.

It’s a lot prettier than it looks online. We went with a blue background to hide all the dirt and sand living next to the ocean.

This rug is thicker than I imagined and looks much more expensive than it is.

The colors are perfect for creating a room around.

you The mattress can be seen here.

A seahorse-decorated plate sits on a wooden table, a white lamp with a sailboat design and a small white jar, all set against a plain wall.

The painted ceramic plate features a white seahorse at the center, surrounded by swirling blue, green and gray waves, with a decorative floral pattern along the rim.

If you watched the original video of the room tour (You can see it here), you know how important all the memories and things my mother has collected over the years are to her.

It was important that we keep art and accessories that have meaning to her.

Like this painting of a beach house in its original frame.

And this seahorse plate that my sister painted for her.

white fabric with vertical blue lines; Some lines are dashed, while others have a leafy vine pattern. The fabric has folds, which create slight shading and variation in the appearance of the pattern.

A close-up of a pillow with a painted design of blue and green abstract flowers and leaves rests on a textured blue-green fabric.

Light-colored curtains with vertical blue and gray patterns partially cover the windows, allowing some natural light to filter through. The wall near the window is decorated with a matching leaf patterned border.

A wooden rocking chair with a blue knitted blanket and a white pillow featuring blue flowers sits by the window with white curtains decorated with a blue leaf pattern.

// Blue and white curtains //

This is a vintage rocking chair from Cape.

I ditched the main cushion and added a hand painted hydrangea pillow instead.

The blue throw on the chair was handmade for my mother by the ladies at the local church after my father passed away.

And you can also see the blue and white curtains we chose (instead of scalloped curtains).

you You can see them here.

A white table lamp with a gold base sits on a wooden surface next to a glass vase containing blue hydrangeas. The background is a white wall with wainscoting.

// A set of lamps //

These lamps were the best invention.

They come in sets of two with a gold finial and a gold base and are under $40 for both lamps.

you You can see them here.

A close-up of a white wall decorated with various framed pictures and paintings, mainly depicting coastal scenes with boats, houses and landscapes.

A bright bedroom with a white bed featuring blue floral bedding, patterned pillows, a wooden nightstand with a vase of purple flowers, white curtains, and framed artwork on the wall above the bed.

I grouped all the pictures around the room and created a gallery wall over the bed.

Every picture has a memory.

There are hand-painted pieces and needle-pointed houses by my grandmother, and even a piece of art depicting the church where my parents were married.

A clear glass vase with blue hydrangea sits on a wooden surface in front of a mirror, which reflects a bed with patterned pillows and a white lamp in a cozy bedroom.

This is a hydrangea from a tree my father planted years ago.

I added vases of them throughout the room.

you can Read the story of the hydrangea bush here.

Four white cloth napkins, each decorated with a delicate blue floral branch pattern and pale blue dotted line borders, are neatly folded and arranged side by side.

A clear glass vase with water and green stems sits on a mirror-topped wooden table covered with a white cloth with a blue floral border pattern.

My mother didn’t want to paint the dresser, so I came up with the best idea.

I got these blue and white linen napkins from Walmart.

They are on clearance right now for a set of four for under $4.

you You can see them here.

I placed them under the glass on top of the dresser to create a vintage look (and then I had two napkins left over to make a pillow).

A neatly made bed with three pillows featuring a blue and white pattern: one with a floral, one with a grid and one with a repeating floral motif, all on a white textured bedspread.

// Blue and white block print pillow //Floral Comforter Set //White Duvet Cover (Queen)//

I’m so glad we got the bed.

It looks like a vintage iron bed and is very sturdy. you Here you can see the bed.

The floral comforter set is a queen and came with a set of blue sheets and shams.

you Check out the comforter set here.

Then I found and added two rugs in the living room This blue and white block print pillow.

A small, bright bathroom with a white toilet, striped curtains, nautical decor and a "Cape Cod" Sign on the shelf above the toilet. A lamp with a sailboat design sits on a wooden table in the foreground.

I also did a mini refresh in the bathroom with new curtains and a few new bathroom accessories.

I also shot a quick video of a 360-degree view of the room.

Sometimes it’s easier to get an idea of a room with a video.

A partially open curtained window shows a view of green bushes, trees, a road and a distant house under a blue sky with clouds.

The room project was a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for following up and helping with all the suggestions.

There are so many fun finds in the space and it feels so beachy and fun and full of memories.

The most incredible thing about this room?

There is a view outside the window. 🙂

PS If you are wondering did my mother like the room? I later came to find her lying in bed with a smile on her face. 🙂

A bright coastal bedroom with white walls, blue floral bedding, matching rug, small bench and framed pictures above the bed. Sunlight streams through the curtains on the two windows.
