Instead of cleaning the oven, she fills the bathtub with hot water and dishwasher detergent, giving the baked-on grease time to loosen before the first sponge touches the metal.

The bathtub works the method. Unlike a kitchen sink, it holds the entire rack under water at once, allowing access to each wire without flipping or repositioning the rack. After several hours of soaking, most of the grease comes off with less effort than expected.

The process begins by removing each rack from the oven rather than attempting to clean around them inside the appliance. Once the racks sit on a flat surface, each side becomes accessible during soaking.

Removing both racks at the same time also means that the entire oven can remain empty while grease is released elsewhere.

A kitchen sink can barely hold a full-size oven rack without leaving the upper portions of the water. The bathtub is adjustable which allows the rack to lie flat from end to end.

The racks remain submerged for about four hours while the detergent works on the baked-on grease. Instead of removing residue by force, the soak weakens the bond between the grease and the metal.

By the end of the soak, the water has become cloudy with loose grease and residue. Most of the buildup has left the rack before the sponge touches the metal.
