as Ideal homeA certified expert in vacuums, I spend my days testing new and innovative vacuum cleaners from major brands that put untold amounts of money into their product development. But while I trust these brands to deliver, there’s one woman I trust more than anyone: my nan. And my nan swears by her old-school carpet sweeper.
Of course, my guide Best vacuum cleaners Modern models are packed with dust-and-dirt-busting features to make cleaning more efficient than ever. But there’s no denying that these vacuums can often be heavy, cumbersome, and very expensive. For some people, they are more complicated than they need to be.

As I am used to modern vacuum options, thus the idea of buying a manual carpet sweeper Bissell Sturdy Sweep Manual Floor Sweeper (£24 at Argos) Despite thousands of positive reviews from happy customers, it was a little too old school for me.
So, I decided to find a middle ground and test a battery-powered model that could be used on both carpet and hard. flooring. And on paper, Gtech floor sweeper offers a lot if you compare its specs The best cordless vacuum cleaners.
It has a run time of up to 60 minutes, a 0.5L dust canister, and weighs just 1.6kg – making those specs almost the same as mine. Dyson V8 CycloneWhich I usually use to clean the floor in my house. But instead of being around £400, carpet sweepers cost less than £70.

However, specs mean nothing if a floor cleaner can’t actually clean the floor, so I decided to vacuum – or should I sweep? – My whole house first. The visible difference was immediate, and it handled everything from dirty shoes to mud to small sticks stuck in my dog’s hair with ease. But I wanted to take it a step further and evaluate it using the same criteria that we use Test regular vacuum cleaners.
To test its debris-picking power, I dumped flour, oats, and rice onto a sample carpet and then swept it up. At best, a high-quality vacuum with powerful suction will remove all of this debris in one pass—or at least two.
A carpet sweeper, though? Well, it actually performed a lot better than I thought. Although he struggled with the flour and needed about six passes to pick up the finer debris, he had no problem with the larger debris and picked up every grain of rice and oats by the second pass.
I then repeated the process on my hard flooring, but it wasn’t as effective. It once again struggled with flour, although it only took two passes to remove the larger debris. So, while this carpet sweeper can be used on hard floors, it really thrives on carpets and rugs.
After this, I continued to use the carpet sweeper in my house for a week, and I was amazed at how much human and dog hair it picked up – especially for something so basic and affordable. But after each cleaning session was over, my floors were visibly clean, and the dust bin was full of debris.
However, I can say with confidence that a carpet sweeper is not as good as a modern vacuum cleaner – but I don’t hold that against it, because ultimately, it is. not vacuum. It’s a carpet sweeper that isn’t designed with the same level of suction power or the same high-tech features as regular vacuums.
However, this means that it will struggle to pick up microscopic dust and debris that is not visible. Also, the only tool it comes with is a feather duster (which, incidentally, is another one My new favorite old-school cleaning tools), which may not be enough for most households.

But it’s a great, affordable option for a vacuum that I’d definitely recommend if you’ve always wanted another vacuum but don’t want to drop hundreds on another, because it’s perfect for quick, everyday cleaning. I can also understand why older people (like my nan) prefer carpet cleaners, as they are very lightweight and couldn’t be easier to use.
Because of this, I think a carpet cleaner can sit happily alongside my more high-tech models that have decent HEPA filtration to pick up and hold fine particles like dust, pet dander and pollen – and I’d suggest the same if you struggle with allergies and don’t have one. Best air purifier at your disposal. I don’t think it can be only A floor cleaning tool in your home, though.
