Gaby Dellal’s decorating dos and don’ts

Draw the door

I often look for recessed doors first and then work on the openings around them. This way you don’t have to compromise on having beautiful doors and the size adds to the scale of the room.

Leave the glitter behind

Forget polished marble. Marble can be very ‘bling’ and, while a stunning surface or wallcovering, I believe it needs to be subdued and not screamed.

But don’t underestimate the power of the mirror

A reflective splashback or surface can completely transform a kitchen, reflecting light and making the room seem twice its size.

A reflective brass splashback (and matching panel on the dishwasher door) adds a real sense of depth and sophistication to the actor. Kitchen by Jolly Richardsonwhich Gabby designed with him.

Your Isager

Brighten up your kitchen

Tiled splashbacks aren’t the only way to introduce color, you can throw splashes of color on the inside of drawers, on the ceiling, on the floor, and break away from traditional ideas.

Don’t skimp on the curtains

Curtains are not a fabric. I love collecting fabrics over time and combining linens, velvets and patterns together to create something layered and unique. And when sizing curtains, generosity is key. I always allow at least two to three times the width of the window to achieve that perfect look. The sound of curtain rings on big bold curtain rails is always comforting on a winter night and heralds the break of day with much fanfare.

Get away from the crit

For me, it’s all about the wooden frames now.

Don’t dismiss the boring details

For instance, no one gets excited about an underlay, but the right one can completely change how a mattress feels. It is always worth paying attention to these more practical details.
