Our earthly home is a shelter, but God is our strong tower. Find out what Proverbs 18:10 teaches us about finding true refuge and our true forever home.
I’m a shelter blogger, a term used to describe bloggers who write about anything home related. And I think that’s a pretty accurate title. To me, the word shelter speaks of all things home, a sanctuary away from the world and protection from all things harmful.
I spend most of my day, almost every day, immersed in the beautiful world of home decor, and I love it. I hear readers and clients talking about their forever homes. Stonegable, although I loved it, was not my forever home and Tanglewood was not my forever home. Today, let’s talk about our true refuge – our true forever home.
Our true forever home
Proverbs 18:10 says…
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run into it and are safe.
In our journey through life, we seek places of refuge, sanctuaries and our true refuge. But our final refuge and eternal home is found in God.
In ancient times, cities were fortified to protect against attacks. Within the walls of these cities was a mighty fort with a strong tower, Elevated and stately, known as a in Hebrew Almonds. When trouble arose, the inhabitants of the walled city would rush to this tower, seeking safety and refuge above the dangers below.
God’s character revealed
Proverbs 18:10 reminds us that God’s name serves as our strong tower, our migdal. But what is the meaning of taking refuge in God’s name? In ancient cultures, a person’s name was deeply intertwined with their character and reputation, which they fiercely guarded. To know someone’s name was to know their essence, their being.
When we speak of God’s name, we refer to His divine attributes and character: omnipotent, omniscient, ever-present, eternal, unfathomable, self-existent, self-sufficient, infinite, sublime, sovereign, holy, righteous, righteous, merciful, long-lasting, merciful. Angry, truthful, loyal, jealous and more.
Imagine such shelter as your eternal shelter. God, our eternal and true refuge, is no comparison to our earthly homes, no matter how secure or beautiful they may be.
This realization brings a compelling thought: If God is our eternal home, shouldn’t we spend more time knowing, obeying, loving, and dwelling in Him than maintaining our earthly dwellings? Our earthly home is important; They provide us with a sense of security and happiness. However, how much more important is our eternal home in God?
Take some time to think deeply about this. Selah—Pause and meditate on this truth.
Stonegable was a beautiful house. Tanglewood is a beautiful home. And someday I will have another beautiful home. But none of them were ever meant to be my forever home, and none of them can offer what God has to offer. He is a strong tower that never moves, a refuge that never fails, and what my heart truly longs for. Wherever you are today, and whatever home you’re in, I hope you know you always have a place to run.
