Wire baskets usually organize a closet, pantry, or garage. DIY creator Chelsea Mohrman Turned into compact wall storage with stained wood shelves and hanging hooks gave it a completely different purpose.

Instead of using baskets as floor containers, she mounted them sideways on the wall, added a stained wood top, and attached hooks underneath to create storage for everyday items without relying on bulky shelves or cabinets.
The finished piece looks more like boutique wall storage than a basic wire basket.

The wire basket already had the proper structure built in
Due to which this project became operational.
The rectangular wire shape was already seen near hanging storage shelves sold for entryways, kitchens and apartments. Instead of creating a frame from scratch, she used an existing basket shape and changed its position.
Once mounted horizontally, the bottom became a storage pocket while the flat edge at the top acted as a floating shelf base.
After the orientation change the basket stopped looking like utility storage.

The wood top changed the whole feel
Before wood was added, wire still felt industrial and unfinished.
The stained board added warmth and gave the shelf more balance against the exposed metal grid. Once assembled, the piece began to feel closer to boutique wall decor than garage hardware.
The top shelf also makes another useful surface for candles, clocks, plants, framed art or small decor pieces.
That contrast between warm wood and exposed wire became one of the strongest parts of the finished shelf.

Hooks add another layer of storage
Metal S-hooks turn the bottom basket into more of a wall shelf.
Scarves, bags, towels, mugs, headphones or keys can hang underneath while the basket stores larger items on top. That vertical layout creates more storage without taking away floor space from the room.
Because the structure remains open, even hanging objects become part of the display rather than hidden clutter.

The same basket can be used for more than one room
Once mounted on the wall, the basket stopped feeling attached to a garage or utility storage.
A similar structure can be:
- Entry way collection
- Coffee station shelves
- Bathroom wall storage
- Bedside organization
- Kitchen storage
- Craft room shelves
Larger baskets can also create deeper floating shelves with more storage underneath.
Wood finishes and paint also change direction quickly. A dark stain gives the shelf a soft industrial look, while matte black, white, beige or bright spray paint colors push the piece towards a modern, Scandinavian, rustic or playful interior, without changing the structure.
