While tankless water heaters are known to deliver a constant flow of hot water and last longer than traditional tanks, they are not completely maintenance-free. Over time, calcium and magnesium deposits can build up inside the heating elements, which can quietly reduce the efficiency of your system and force it to work twice as hard.

To help you protect your investment, we talked to two professional plumbers about how often homeowners should clean their tankless water heaters and the tools and materials needed to clean them properly. Read on for their expert insights on how to clean a tankless water heater, including a step-by-step guide to flushing your system and keeping your hot water flowing smoothly.

Staying on top of cleaning and maintenance protects the efficiency of your water heater, extends the life of the heat exchanger, reduces energy consumption and helps prevent costly repairs, says Brandon Hughes, company owner. Hughes Plumbing Services Inc. ન્યુબરી પાર્ક, કેલિફોર્નિયામાં. “Unpleasant Tankless units have narrow heat exchangers that can accumulate mineral scale (calcium and magnesium) over time, especially in hard water areas,” explains Hughes.

Without regular descaling, water flow can be restricted, and heat transfer efficiency will decrease, leading to reduced hot water production, reduced water pressure, error codes and higher energy bills, warns Jordan Benjamin. Complete ceremony services in Tucson, Arizona. If the buildup is not addressed, the unit can fail completely,” he notes.

When properly cleaned, tankless water heaters can often last 20 years or more. Also, most manufacturers require regular descaling to keep the warranty valid, so it’s important to stick to a consistent schedule, Benjamin says.

Hughes and Benjamin both recommend flushing and descaling the unit once a year as part of your home maintenance routine. “જો તમારા ઘરમાં ખૂબ જ છે hard water or your home uses a lot of hot water, it’s a good idea to service the unit every 6 to 12 months,” says Hughes.

Benjamin recommends checking your owner’s manual for a recommended/required cleaning schedule and then sticking to it. “Don’t wait to clean your unit until you notice a drop in hot water; by the time you notice a drop in efficiency, mineral deposits have been building up for years and can damage internal components,” says Benjamin. “સેટ શેડ્યૂલ પર તેને સાફ કરવું ખૂબ સરળ છે.”

One trick he recommends is to get into the habit of cleaning your water heater every time you clean your drains or schedule annual HVAC service.

Most units have a small inlet screen or prefilter that catches sediment before it enters the heat exchanger. Remove the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions, rinse any debris under running water, and reinstall it.

Open the service port to drain the water trapped inside the heat exchanger.

Then place a submersible utility pump in a 5-gallon bucket filled with descaling solution, connect one hose from the pump to the cold-water service port, and connect another hose from the hot-water service port back to the bucket to create a closed-loop circulation system.

Step 5: Run the pump.

પંપને લગભગ 45 થી 60 મિનિટ સુધી ચલાવો. This dissolves mineral scale built up inside the heat exchanger.

Empty the bucket, refill it with clean water, and run fresh water through the unit for a few minutes to remove any remaining descaling solution and loose mineral deposits.

Remove hoses, close service ports, reopen water supply valves, and restore power or gas. Run hot water on a nearby faucet to flush out any trapped air, and then check the unit and all connections for leaks.
