The power of literature was brought into sharp relief during the unveiling of an installation by the ever-inspiring Es Devlin during a visit to Castle Howard in mid-June. Set in the magnificent Temple of the Four Winds – a place originally used for reading and refreshment – Library of the Four Winds The visionary architect behind Castle Howard was conceived to mark the centenary year of Sir John Vanbrugh.
Filled with hundreds Books With their spines facing inwards, the moving sculpture is illuminated by projections of quotations and set to a soundscape of Eze reading excerpts from her literary selections, classical music and birdsong. The mirrored base reflects the brightly ornate ceiling, making old and new feel as one. The effect is spellbinding. Outside, tables encircling the shrine are strewn with books from Es’s personal library, complete with his drawings and annotations. A quote from David Abrams in his 1996 book The Spell of the Senses Stay with me: ‘A story that makes sense is one that rouses the senses from their slumber, a story that opens eyes and ears to their real surroundings, tunes the tongue to real tastes in the air, and sends a chill of recognition over the surface of the skin.’
