Looking for tips and ideas for organizing a small closet? Here’s how to transform a small closet in an afternoon.
Just in case no one else has mentioned it yet?
You have all understood the assignment.
Thank you so much for helping me in my mother’s room. I appreciate you so much.
I shared my mother’s room (before) and I’m going to share next, hopefully next week. But what if you’ve wondered what the rest of the house looks like? you can take Here’s a tour of our family beach house. I have a bedroom with an ocean view in front of our family beach house.
It has been my bedroom since I was a little girl.
I love the sound of waves outside the window.
I love the sea breeze that blows the curtains.
I love the wooden floor under my feet.
I really love everything about this bedroom.
Except.
Except in the closet.
I think it was built for a gerbil—perhaps a marine one with a mustache—but a gerbil nonetheless.
Every year, after I put all my items (And my husband’s things) There, I can’t close the closet door.
Someone had to say.
It was time for change.
Here’s where we started.
My beach house bedroom closet looks like this every year before I try to fill it with all my stuff.
(Totally aside: this is the part of the post where you’re looking at me with a vague question in your eyes about how much stuff one really needs for the beach. Really, Carienne, you’re thinking—shouldn’t a closet just consist of leggings, sportswear, and the occasional mumu?)
I understood.
i understand
But here’s the thing. I tend towards the fancy side of things. I’m someone who needs an outfit for every occasion, and I’ve never met a pair of clam diggers I didn’t love. So my selection of beach clothes fills more closets than this.
The main challenge with the closet is that it has a bar, and the bar is kind of low for a closet bar—and it’s hard to tell from the pictures—but the bar makes the serious mistake of being too close to the front of the closet opening.
Therefore, it wastes vertical space and horizontal space.
sigh
somebody. somehow. This closet completely missed the assignment (Unlike all of you).
So here was my closet plan to fix what seemed almost inappropriate.
- Take out the existing closet bars.
- Paint the closet to lighten it up.
- Add the same peel-and-stick wallpaper as the alcove right next to the closet.
- Find a super skinny section of shelves to go in the middle of the closet.
- Add two closet bars on the left and one on the right.
- Move the bar to the back of the closet so there is more room in the front.
- Add a shelf on top for more storage.
what do you think
Do you think it will work?
Do you think I can do it?
If you answered yes, you would be right.
Because now?
Out of this closet went…
For this.
wait what?
can you see I literally doubled my space.
(To a gross aside: at this point, you might be thinking, Kerryanne, what about all that floor space that you haven’t put anything down. Don’t worry, I have more stuff than that and my husband’s stuff too, it can all fit in here now, but I wanted it to look pretty for the pictures.)
I think it makes the project much easier to see.
You can see this mini tour of the closet in this video.
Here’s a close-up so you can see the changes better.
It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but besides all this storage?
The front of the closet is now another 22″.
And 22″ in a gerbil closet is not to be taken lightly.
Here’s how we update the closet in the afternoon.

The secret to organizing a small closet like a pro
1. The existing closet bar was removed.
Don’t worry. It did not go to waste. It was used again.
2. The entire closet was painted white.
The areas where the closet strip was were lightly sanded and then painted white, as well as the rest of the closet.
3. I ordered 2 rolls of this peel-and-stick wallpaper to match the peel-and-stick wallpaper in the alcove behind the closet.
It’s super easy to apply (just like contact paper) and there’s a 20% off coupon right now.
you can Check out the bark-and-wood wallpaper here.
4. I found this super skinny cabinet that actually has seven separate cubbies—shelves haven’t been added yet. It measures 11.81″D x 12.99″W x 70.87″H.
There is a door on the bottom, but I wanted to use it on the top instead so it flipped upside down. You can also order them in different sizes depending on the size of your closet.
It comes in many different sizes and is on sale right now.
you You can see the cabinet here.
5. The original closet rods were then cut into separate closet rods.
One for the right side and two for the left side.
After some maneuvering and planning, I found that it was better to make the right side a bit smaller to give me more room for the two bars on the left.
It was easier to use the original closet bars and then I got a few extra closet fittings from Home Depot.
6. Next, a shelf was added at the top.
It is attached to the top of the cabinet and to the closet brackets on both sides.
This gave me lots of extra storage on top of the closet for beach bags, coolers, beach towels and extra bedding.
7. There are two hooks on the edge of the door for robes and towels.
I also ordered these gray and white chevron organizers for the shelves.
you Organizers can be found here.
They came in sets of two, and I just ordered two more sets for the rest of the shelves.
I’m also getting a shoe organizer and a hamper for the closet when I have so much extra room.
Another look at the closet.
Of these.
For this.
Can you believe it?
It’s kind of amazing.
you Here you can see the rest of the bedroom and take a mini tour.
It made me smile every time I opened the door yesterday and now everything will be ready for summer when we get back.
What’s better than an organized closet?
Listening to the ocean when you open the door. 🙂
