For the longest time, I was intimidated to walk into a Rockler store. I was a simple DIYer with the basics toolsAnd Rockler had a reputation as a go-to place for serious hobbyist woodworkers like my father, who built professional-level cabinetry and furniture for decades.

In the years since my father passed away, I have become more serious about my own carpentry. That meant more trips to Rockler, and a growing realization of how wrong I was about this place. Rockler isn’t just for experienced woodworkers. Between its selection of high-end tool brands, exotic lumber, hands-on classes, and knowledgeable staff, it has become one of my favorite stops, and I think it will become one of yours, too. Here’s why.

If you look in my shop cabinets, you’ll see lots of rocker blue. I’ve picked up a number of Rockler-branded jigs and accessories over the years, including a tapering jig that I used to make an angled plant stand and will soon use again to cut coffee table legs in the next month or two. Rockler has its own team of product designers and engineers who regularly develop new tools and accessories, and the lineup is constantly growing.

But the biggest draw for many buyers is the choice of brands. On almost every visit, I see another customer running their hand across the bed of an expensive joint, like they’ve found something they didn’t know they were looking for.

Fantastic wood selection

Like most woodworkers, I am asked to make cutting boards for special occasions and holiday gifts. If I’m lucky, I have scraps of hard maple or walnut, but I like to add paddock or purpleheart for a pop of color, and that means a trip to Rockler.

Rockler offers the best selection of exotic wood in my area, available by the board foot or in small individual pieces. Prices for standard species such as walnuts and cherries are also reasonable, especially during their frequent sales. It’s the type of lumber section that makes you want to start a project you haven’t planned yet.

Hands-on learning

I’ve watched plenty of YouTube videos about epoxy projects, but given how expensive resin supplies can be, I was hesitant to attempt my own. When I saw that Rockler offered a monthly hands-on epoxy class, I signed up right away.

The class was incredibly helpful. Instructor Duane gauged the experience level of each of the four participants beforehand and tailored their lessons accordingly. We had a couple of home workshops; One participant had not touched a bandsaw since high school shop class. However, I never felt like my time was being wasted, and my less experienced classmates were never overwhelmed or talked down to. A week after the class, I walked away with a solid understanding of the epoxy process and a beautiful charcuterie board that is now my wife’s favorite.

I have since attended other classes, and it has been rewarding to see complete beginners gain real confidence with the tools and materials. A classmate used a router table with a chamfer bit for the first time and was so proud of her work that she immediately sent a photo to her husband. I’ll admit I’ve never used a lathe myself, so I may sign up for a beginner class in the coming months. Worst case, I learn a skill I never use and end up with a wooden pen. Actual worst case (for my wife): I love it and buy another tool that takes up space in the garage.

Every employee is a wood worker

If I have a question about mortizing box joints or cabinet hinges, I ask a Rockler employee, and I always get a helpful answer. Every staff member I have encountered is a woodworker himself. Most are retired from other businesses and want to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with customers. (An employee discount doesn’t hurt, either.)

I’ve had long conversations about a project I’m working on, most recently a record player stand I made as a Christmas gift for my wife, and the staff almost always helps me come up with a better solution than I could have come up with on my own. This kind of expertise is rare in a retail setting, and it’s one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back.
