The best Covent Garden restaurants right now

The best Thai restaurant in Covent Garden

The Covent Garden outpost is the third Plaza Khao Gang to open in four years, following Tottenham Court Road and Borough Yards; It’s safe to say that the restaurant and its concept have been a runaway success. With zingy, kitsch decor inspired by low-key, authentic Thai curry houses and an affordable, intensely flavored (often spicy) menu, it’s not hard to see why. It’s a convenient pitstop to refuel for a solo lunch during a day of shopping, but it’s just as perfect for sharing a lively dinner with a group of friends.

Sticks are new to the menu at this location, and we were particularly impressed with the fragrant cuttlefish skewers in a red curry sauce and the tender marinated lamb with black pepper, garlic and cumin. Another highlight was the pad mee gati – stir fried prawns served in the half shell, with vermicelli noodles, coconut and chives. Flaky, warm bread is made to mop up the lip-smacking sauce after the plates are empty. We were forewarned about the spice level of certain dishes, but our waiter was incredibly helpful in talking us through this, even using a marker pen on the menu to note the spiciness of each dish. If the heat is still a concern, we’d recommend ordering fresh tea kiow yen, iced Thai green tea with condensed milk, to cool off.
