If you’ve been living under a rock (which would be much cooler than where I’m sitting right now), temperatures are rising into uncomfortable territory and many Portable air conditioners are sold either Or carry eye-watering price tags. I found myself recommending a different cooling appliance to friends and family this week: the air cooler.
If you’ve never met before, I’ll explain a little about them and how they differ. The best air conditioners And fans. Sitting somewhere between a fan and one Air conditionerAir coolers are an underrated appliance that seems to fly under the radar until a heatwave hits.
But after testing a few cooling devices over the years Ideal homeI think it’s one of the cheapest ways to stay comfortable when the mercury rises. Here’s more on what they are and why you should get your hands on a quick snap.
What is an air cooler?
Unlike a standard fan, which circulates warm air around the room, an air cooler uses water to create a cooling breeze.
Emma Coleman, seasonal shopper Robert DyceExplain that unlike a fan, an air cooler releases cool air instead of circulating hot air, which would have a more significant effect on temperature.
You fill the internal tank with cold water (and sometimes reusable ice packs), and as the warm air passes through the device, it is cooled before a fan inside the unit circulates it around your room. In fact, it works a lot like this effectively Fan Ice Cube Hack.

‘This temperature will also be felt throughout the room rather than a focal point of fan cooling. Some even have a heating function, making them useful even in winter,’ explains Emma.
It is important to be clear, however, that an air cooler is not a portable air conditioner by any stretch of the imagination. It will not dramatically reduce the temperature of the entire room uniformly a Fitted AC unit can do
However, it makes the air blowing at you feel cooler and fresher than a standard fan, which can make a huge difference on hot, sticky days.

We have not tested any of the following models; However, we have based our selection on brand reputation and shopper reviews.

Easier on the eye than others on this list, this air cooler is from one of the best cooling brands we know, Dukes. With its advanced evaporative cooling system, it delivers a refreshing breeze, effectively cooling spaces up to 50m2. Dukes states that it is actually ideal for outdoor patios as well as indoors.
The biggest advantage is their affordability. While many portable air conditioners cost from £300 to £600 or more, a good air cooler often costs less than £100. They’re also much easier to live with, with no bulky exhaust hose to hang out the window, no complicated installation, and they’re quieter and more energy-efficient than portable AC units.
Having said that, if you’re expecting a more dramatic cooling effect, you might be a little disappointed, but if you’re looking for a way to cool yourself down during a heatwave, it’s an option worth considering, as there are plenty in stock right now.
With more spells of hot weather forecast and air conditioners increasingly hard to come by, it’s a cooling tool I’d recommend to friends and family for some quick relief.
If you’re struggling to find an in-stock air conditioner or want a budget cooling option, a compact air cooler may be just the sweet spot.
It won’t necessarily cool your room like an AC, but it can make you feel a lot cooler, and I think that really counts in the middle of a sweltering UK summer.
