With so many of us struggling with the heat, it’s no wonder that the best fans and Portable air conditioners are being sold. But this Fan positioning hackWhen used correctly, can help cool a room quickly and efficiently.
This DIY wind chill hack uses two fans to create a cross breeze in the room, which has a more cooling effect than how you would normally use a fan. Disclaimer: You must have a fan outside the window. Here’s how it works.
How to make a wind chill at home
Unless you have an effective Misting fan (such as DREO Turbocool Misting Fan, £99, Amazon), it sounds like your fan is blowing hot air around your room, which isn’t exactly the cooling effect you’re looking for.
To create the wind chill effect you’re looking for, you’ll need two fans to create a cross breeze. This hack works by creating a funnel of cold air around your room instead of just spreading warm air.

‘Airflow is the key to creating the wind chill effect. Essentially, you need to use a fan to recycle the air. To do this, you need to place a fan outside the window on the hottest side of the house to act as an exhaust. At the same time, open windows or doors on the opposite, shadier side of the house. Air pushed out will be replaced by cooler air drawn in. To increase the effect you can use another fan pushing fresh air in,’ explains MikoChris Michael, co-founder of
‘This activity is done late at night or early in the morning to take advantage of the cool air outside.’
This hack is ideal if you already have a few fans on hand. Its main drawback is that it relies on cooler outdoor air than indoor air, so it is best done in the early morning or evening. For an even more cooling effect, you can also add a bowl of ice to the mix.

‘For a more cooling effect, place a bowl filled with ice cubes or frozen water bottles in front of a fan blowing towards you. As the air passes through the ice cube, it carries some of the chill before it hits you, providing a cooling effect, especially before bed,” adds Max Wilson, co-founder Pocket storage.
‘A very common mistake when dealing with a heatwave is to try to cool the whole house. Of course, without Air conditionerThis will be extremely difficult. You need to focus your efforts on creating a special ‘cool zone’ in the coldest room in the house.’
