So, you’ve finally managed to repurpose your collection of mason jars, but now there’s a stack of lids left and a whole other problem to solve. You need to do something with them, so why not try a craft that’s an easy, cute, and whimsical way to whiten a few lids from a stack? While there are all kinds of ways to use them around the house, you can start right at the front door by turning those lids into an attractive front door sign!
The idea is to decorate your mason jar lids, string them together and hang them on your front door. Write a message on the hard backing to turn the decoration into a sign, or decorate each mason jar lid with a letter to spell out a word. What your sign says is only limited by your creativity, the number of lids you have, and your art supplies. Create a friendly welcome sign, festive holiday decorations, or be silly with jokes for a fun first impression.
You will need rope or string to hang your sign and hot glue to attach everything. There are countless decorating possibilities. Paint, colorful paper or fabric, flowers, pinecones, and ribbons are all good options. Just be sure to choose a primer and glue that will work on metal for long-lasting decor. If you don’t want a permanent message, use Homemade Chalkboard Paint Or dry erase tape for marking (or even lids). And don’t worry if you only have lid rings—you can fill the center with paper or fabric to decorate them! Create a front door sign and decor for your mason jar lid
If you are unsure of what theme to choose for your main entrance decoration, you can’t go wrong with seasonal themes. Transform an old door. To make a more common welcome sign, you can ask everyone in your family to decorate their own lids. For each mason jar lid, glue the inner circle (or whatever paper or fabric you’re using instead) to the outer ring to secure it before decorating. Make a separate sign piece by cutting a piece of cardboard, wood, or other rigid material to the size and shape you want. You can sketch out your message first and compare the size of the sign to your mason jar lid to make sure everything has the right proportions, fits properly, and looks great. If you want to use the lid as a sign, count the letters and arrange the lid first so it fits over your front door.
Clean each lid, and then apply a coat of primer or hot glue rope, fabric, or paper to it to create a surface that’s easy to decorate. Add your decor or decoration, and even paint your sign. With everything decorated, attach a loop of string or rope to the top of the sign to hang it. Cut a piece of rope, string or ribbon long enough to fit over all your mason jar lids and sign and carefully hot glue it to the back of each piece, spacing the lids evenly for a clean look. When the glue dries, hang it over your front door and enjoy your beautiful new DIY decor!
