Materials needed
- Terracotta pots, 2” (or smaller)
- A square wooden cutout (4″ wide) with a circle hole in the middle.
- Black paint (we used Rustoleum spray paint)
- Golden yellow yarn or embroidery thread
- Hot glue gun (optional)
Substitute craft supplies
If you don’t have a square cubed cutout, you can easily swap it out for a piece of black cardstock or cardboard. Punch a hole in the center with an awl or sharp object.

How to make graduation caps using terracotta flower pots
Paint the pot and the wooden cutout black and leave it to dry completely.

Thread the long loose end of the tassel through the wooden cutout and then again through the bottom of the pot.
Tie a knot at the end so it doesn’t come loose.

And voila! Cheap and cheerful grad party decor is ready!

How to style these finished graduation caps
Festival centerpiece
Instead of placing just one pot in the center of the table, style them in groups of three. Make each of the grad caps in different sizes using different sized terracotta pots and square cutouts. So with a 4″ square instead of a 2″ pot; Use a 1″ pot with a 3″ square or a 4″ pot with an 8″ square.
