Pendant lights made from woven materials often cost much more than basic ceiling fixtures. Looking for a different approach, Francesca Stone Converted a woven storage basket into a pendant shade that fits around an existing ceiling light instead of buying a new fixture.
The project required only a basket, basic lighting hardware and a carefully cut opening large enough for fittings. Instead of replacing the electrical components, the basket became the pendant’s new outer shell.
Once installed, the woven texture introduced pattern, depth and natural materials above the seating area. What started as a storage basket ended up as a pendant shade that looks closer to a boutique lighting fixture than something assembled from household materials.
Woven baskets became the starting point
A woven basket provides the framework for the entire project. Its shape, texture and size already resemble many pendant shades sold in home decor stores.
Using baskets rather than building the shed from scratch eliminated much of the fabrication work and focused the project on modifying existing objects.
An opening was cut into the base
A square opening in the bottom of the basket was marked and cut. The opening needs to be large enough for the pendant hardware while leaving enough woven material to maintain the shape of the basket.
This change transformed the basket from a storage container into a component that could interact with existing light fixtures.
The present pendant hardware was designed
The light fitting was disassembled so that the basket could be arranged around the mounting components.
Removing the hardware first made installation easier and allowed the basket to sit in its final position without straining or damaging the woven fibers.
The basket shade was located around the ring
Before final assembly, the basket and shade ring were aligned together to confirm fit.
This step ensures that the opening aligns with the hardware and that the basket will hang evenly once attached.
The pendant goes through the fitting basket
The light fitting was threaded through the opening and attached to the shade ring inside the basket.
At this stage, the basket began to function as a lampshade rather than a storage accessory.
Hardware locked the shade in position
The fixture components were reassembled and tightened around the basket.
Those connections secured the basket in place and prevented movement once the light was suspended from the ceiling.
The woven texture changed the appearance of the fixture
The basket introduced texture that the original fixture lacked. Woven patterns let light through while natural fibers soften the look of the bulbs and hardware.
The woven surface also created more visual interest than a standard fabric or metal shade.
Natural materials add depth from every angle
Viewed from the side, the woven construction shows layers, shadows and variations in texture.
Those details gave the shade a handcrafted look and helped distinguish it from mass-produced lighting.
A woven basket finish as a pendant light
Once installed, the basket introduced texture and natural materials that changed the look of the fixture without changing the existing light. The textured surface added depth and contrast against the white ceiling and walls.
LED bulbs are the best choice for such projects because they generate much less heat than incandescent or halogen bulbs. Smart options like Philips Hue also allow brightness and color temperature adjustments without changing the fixture.
The finished pendant bears little resemblance to the original storage basket. What started as a simple woven container became a ceiling light shade that feels custom-made for the space.
This project shows how a modification can turn everyday household items into a functional lighting feature.
