Learn how God’s Word provides wisdom, direction, and encouragement for everyday living. Find out why Psalm 119:105 remains a powerful guide for every step.
When life seems uncertain, when the path ahead is unclear, or when we simply need wisdom for the next step, there is a light we can always turn to.
Word of God.
Psalm 119:105 gives us one of the most beautiful promises in scripture:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
God never intended for us to live in darkness. He has given us His Word to guide, teach, comfort and show us the way.
Breakfast around our table
When my children were young, I used to get up early every morning at school and make breakfast. I won’t pretend it was always easy. Some mornings I practically dragged myself out of bed. But there was something more important than the hot breakfast waiting on the table.
A spiritual breakfast.
Before school and before work, our family gathered around the kitchen table. We ate together, read God’s word together, worked through devotional books together, and prayed together.
It was often still dark outside. Within our home, God’s truth shined before the day began. We did this year after year.
Was I the perfect mother? Not even close. But I knew that feeding my children physically and spiritually was the greatest gift I could give them.
Finding Jesus changed everything
I came to faith in Christ when I was 33 years old. I knew exactly what Jesus had saved me from, and I knew that He had paid an incredible price for my salvation. The weight that had weighed on my soul for years was lifted, and I hungered for God in a way I had never felt before.
I wanted to know him. I wanted to understand his character. I wanted to hear His voice through His Word. Most of all, I wanted my children to know him too.
By God’s grace, both my children accepted Christ at a young age. My prayer was that they would be spared the many painful choices and consequences I experienced before coming to faith.
A verse that felt written just for me
Psalm 42:1 perfectly described what was happening in my heart:
“As a deer pants after water, my soul pants after you.”
When I first read these words it felt as if God had written them just for me. That verse captures my longing to know him more.
The more I read the Scriptures, the more I loved God. The more I studied, the more I believed it. The more I trusted him, the more I wanted to obey him.
God’s Word was changing me from the inside out.
How can you serve a God you do not know
I used to say to my children, “How can you serve a God you don’t know”? How can one know God with whom one has not spent time?
When my children turned thirteen, I asked them to commit to reading a chapter from the book of Psalms and a chapter from the book of Proverbs every day until they were out of high school. And they did.
Why the Book of Psalms? Because God shows His character in it. It shows who he is. And it is so important not to think of God as a man or someone you can even hope to fully understand! But the Psalms give the reader a small glimpse the glory God’s!
And why read the book of Proverbs? Well, let’s get it right from the source…
Proverbs of Solomon, son of King David of Israel:
to gain wisdom and instruction;
to understand words of insight;
To receive instruction in prudent conduct,
To do what is right and fair and just;
To give wisdom to those who are simple,
Knowledge and wisdom for the youth-
Let the wise hear and add to their learning,
And let the wise be guided—
To understand proverbs and sayings,
Wise sayings and riddles.
what a gift
Wisdom.

sensible behavior.

They are the things every teenager needs. They are things that every adult needs too.
Your word is a lamp to my feet
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
God’s word illuminates the dark places of life. It sheds light on the confusion. It reveals the truth when the world offers conflicting messages. It helps us to distinguish right from wrong. It shows us where to put our feet and in which direction to walk.
The Bible does not always tell the whole way forward. Instead, it gives us enough light for the next faithful step. And then the next. And then the next.
This is how God often leads His children.
Today, I want to ask you the same question I asked my children years ago. Have you committed to reading a chapter from Psalms and a chapter from Proverbs each day?
Not as a duty. Not to check a box. But because you want to know God who loves you.
Open His Word. Let its truth shape your thinking. His wisdom will guide your decisions, and God’s Word will illuminate the path of your life. You will be amazed at how clearly God directs your steps when you spend time with Him consistently.
Your word is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. Psalm 119:105
Let the Word of God shine brightly on your path this week, and you will see it glorified in every area of your life
